Pine tree webbing

BobbyBeach

I was out looking at my pine trees today and saw this webbing of white sacks with little ball-like things in them. Any ideas on what these are?

The webbing was stronger than the average spider web I've encountered, but there were spiders around.

Thanks for any ideas.

Ummmm.......spiders do not usually build cocoons like that. Webbing is one thing but extended cocoon-like growths (and I see at least three more other than the one in the center) are more indicative of things like bag worms or other caterpillar-forming larvae. And those could be harmful to the tree. Certainly would not hurt to remove them.

btw, it is not a pine but a fir tree :-))

Thanks folks for your comments. There are a bunch of these in different the five fir trees I have (thank you for the correction!). So just physically removing them will be enough?
