Advice for growing a bird of paradise indoors

I bought a bird of paradise plant about 3 weeks ago. I am wondering what the best way to care for it indoors. Should it be wet, dry, how much sun? It gets about 5-6 hours of sun each day.

Should I fertilize it monthly? it doesn't look it's best, but i think it may not be getting enough water.

I can post pictures if that would help.

There are two Birds of Paradise (Strelitzia nicolae and S. reginae). It would be helpful to know which one you have as their requirements are somewhat different. Both can be kept as indoor plants but the Giant Bird (S.nicola) tends to be more tolerant of the warmer, dimmer conditions of indoor life.

The best advice is to grow it outside for as long as possible, then bring it inside only when you have to.
