First mature mango of 2010

Just ate the first mature mango of the year. The winner was.........Martinez...which I am now 99% sure is Rosigold. It was pretty good for such an early mango. Some of the fruits are cracking and spoiling...not sure why. Not the typical water logged cracking. This cracking may have something to do with the cold that this mango endured. The taste was sweet, but not overly so. The flesh is fiberless, but had a slightly different consistancy than what I remembered. I guess you would say the flesh was not melting, more firm, almost, but not objectionally firm jelly like. Here are some pictures, for you skeptics. The fruit was also slightly smaller than I remember...but that could be because it grew in a cluster of fruit.

    Rosigold is the most precocious cultivar i know

    what would you say the latest is, Kent, Golden Nugget?

    do you grow a cultivar named Mun Kun Si?

    from Tops website
    {{gwi:1312693}}
    3711 Mangifera indica - Mun Kun Si
    Mango from Thailand, similar to Nam Doc Mai but much bigger, eaten both green (sweet, crispy) and ripe (when yellow). This is a rare variety, very popular among Thai and Vietnamese people. The fruit are extremely sweet, fiberless and somewhat crunchy ("Mun" means crunchy). The fruit are elongated, hang in clusters, and turn yellow when ready to pick. It is a very late producer, fruit may still be on a tree as late as January.

    Harry,
    What about the one we last week? I guess it might not of counted because it didn't mature properly and was kinda rubbery. In my mind I'll still consider it the first lol.

    Bryan:

    I do not grow Mun Kun Si. But, from the description, if it is on the tree in January, I want it. My latest cultivar is Neelum, by far.

    Sheehan:

    The one you tasted at my house did not count....sorry. It was just short of mature. The one I ate today had a much better flavor and aroma.

    The fruit looks great on the inside. I wish I were your neighbor.

    Some of the best tasting fruit on the inside, do come with some not so pretty exteriors. I try to limit fungicide spraying to the least possible with most of the trees. Some trees just won't produce fruit unless you spray...like Julie and I am beginning to think that Alphonso falls in this same category. So....please excuse our blemishes.

    Good for you! The first fruit always tastes soooo good. My fruit are the size of a pea now so I have a couple months yet :(

    Harry,

    Congrats on your first fruit of the season, enjoy. My largest ones that are on the tree look like nice sized green olives so I still have a while left.
