Do you have a Saucer Magnolia?

HI All

I have one that rarely flowers. I've tried a good time release fert. from Calloways for azaleas. I've tried the tree spikes suggested by a neigbor who has a huge one and said that's what her now gone husband used to buy...but doesn't know the brand. I Contacted Scott's by phone and got the spike from them for acid loving trees that the real person suggested. I tried no fert. last summer.

I have great green leaves but no flowers. Others in the neighborhood are covered in blooms. I know I'm doing something wrong.

What do you do? I have the "jane" variety that blooms a few weeks later than the others.

Last summer I had about 6 gorgeous flowers on my 8 ft tall tree....after the leaves.

Any suggestions?

Saucer magnolias are decidious trees, that is they lose their leaves. The tree buds and blooms early and leafs out from the blooms. They are not azaleas and they do not need acid soil to bloom.

thank you TXredhead. I'm still absorbing this truth. I thought magnolias liked acid as pines do. BUT I have a huge Mag. and have only fertilized with irionite a few times and it blooms beautifully. I was told to use irionite so I just did so.
