sharing the BSFL with friends

I know this is the worm forum but I wanted to share info with other newbies (like me) if they find maggots in their worm bin.

I read that BSFL are 'self harvesting', which means when it is time for them to change into flies, they leave the food supply. Self Harvesting because people set up ramps and buckets and they will march right up the ramp to their doom. However, I didn't understand / believe it so I just waited to see what happened. Sure enough, they somehow find their way out of the bin and hide under something to pupate.

Lucky for me I have lots of friends out back waiting for them.

So I have a good system right now...I have enough BSFL to break down the food quickly but not too many to wreck the bin. Then they show themselves the door into the hungry mouths of the lizards, so I don't have to worry about flies buzzing about.
