Time to get free bushes!!!

Now is a good time of year to take cuttings from bushes. I just cut some small to medium size branches and stick them in water until they grow roots. So far I have started variegated red twig dogwood, variegated weigeila, flowering quince, and regular red twig dogwood. If you see a bush you like, most people are happy to let you take a cutting, just ask them, and explain that it is just like pruning.

Would this be a good time to dig up lilac suckers? How well do they transplant?

I would think it would be fine, as long as the ground is not too wet. If you would normally plant stuff the way your soil is, it should be fine. Too wet and you could damage the soil and make it more likely to turn to brick in the summer by digging too early. My soil is fine right now, not too wet or dry.

The soil here is still pretty wet. The lilacs are on a slope so it's probably a little drier, but we wanted to move some suckers to a lower, flatter area. Guess we'll wait a while. Thanks for the info!
