If you have pets or kids, berber is a poor choice for carpet anywhere. I'd look at something commercial with a low pile and a bit of a pattern. It will wear better and look better longer.

I agree. There is berber carpeting in a house we occupy and it never looks good or clean no matter how we attempt to maintain it. It is installed in a small hallway and down a staircase. Three adults and one small dog and the carpet is an ugly mess.

I recently replaced the berber carpet in a public room at at church with a product more suited to the venue and use. Berber is a poor choice for most any situation where significant traffic and use is expected.

The carpet on your stairs will def take a beating! You want something to look good but withstand the foot traffic, I would pick Smartstrand by Mohawk. Very durable, extremely soft product. Withstood Rhino abuse for 2 weeks in the Birmingham, AL zoo!
