My 1920s home has an original "chandelier" in what was the dining room in the upstairs apartment. It is similar to my link below but not as pretty.

concreteprimroses- I like all three fixtures you posted, which is probably part of my problem is deciding. I would likely not do a Tiffany fixture though as I have 2 Tiffany lamps in the living room already.

I saw a couple of antique fixtures I liked at a local salvage place but they are spendy.

For new fixtures, I like the two below. The 1st one would be longer than shown and in a different finish (aged brass or bronze?) and I would change the stems to be fluted:

I live in a 1922 center-entrance colonial revival. My husband and I came across a great 4-armed pan light in an antique shop. I buffed it up and we got it rewired and I think it looks great in our mission-style dining room.

For some reason the picture refuses to show up here, so this link will show you what I mean.

If you're looking for something a little more elegant, we also have a "wedding cake" fixture in our living room that is original to the house. When we bought the place, the base of the light was covered in many coats of paint, and it was also dropping soot on our coffee table (yikes!), so we had it taken down and rewired. The electrician decided to toss the base into a bucket of paint remover while he did the wiring, and are we ever glad he did!

Look at that beautiful brass. These lighting fixtures turn up at salvage places and antique stores now and then, and tend to be a little pricey, but you can't beat 'em for gorgeousness, even with missing crystals.

Yes, and not necessarily flush mount, although that's very cool. I've seen photos of a 1935 house with an original regular wedding cake chandelier. If you go to ebay and search for something like " 1920s lighting" or 1930s, you'll get a wide range of interesting options to help you know what to look for.

FWIW, in the 20s English Tudor or Jacobean rooms often had Spanish Revival or Gothic lighting (look at rooms in the old editions of Good Housekeeping available via google books, for instance), so I don't think they were real purists about sticking to one particular style.

EDIT Forgot to say that pan light is gorgeous, too.

Have you searched on eBay and etsy? A quick search on eBay collectibles for "gothic chandelier" turned up a number of fixtures of the appropriate vintage, ranging in price from $95 to several thousand dollars.

Also, where are you located? Several architectural salvage stores around here (New England) have a variety of 1930s fixtures, some very reasonable.

Here are a couple of examples my quick eBay search turned up -- there are lots more out there.

The one in the link looks very cottagey to me. And the Moe Bridges looks like it would go well with BoE chairs

I'm in Minneapolis. There are quite a few architectural salvage places here so I'm planning to make another round of visits tomorrow. The wedding cake one sold.

I've been checking ebay and etsy and I would be willing to go that route once I can get a better idea on exactly what style and especially size I want.

I'm hoping I'll know it when I see it, but it's true that a nubmer of styles could work in the house (gothic, spanish revival, colonial revival, etc.). I've also seen a few of the slip shade style fixtures that I really like.

While you're cruising the salvage places, remember that a Spanish revival piece with amber glass panels can become English Tudor by changing the glass to "white"! It makes the light more pleasant, too. A stained glass studio can do it for you, relatively inexpensively.

Given your room size, you probably don't want to go any larger than 24" and could go smaller. Your overall length should be around 48" (60" off the floor/30" above the table).

Have you checked out Rejuvenation? They have nice reproductions with lots of flexibility on finishes and shades. I've been happy with everything I've bought from them. Some of their fixtures are budget-busters, but many are reasonably priced for the quality.

Edited to add: Changing the glass only works with shades or flat panels. Curved or molded glass may be impossible to change, and is certainly not inexpensive to do.

if you are cruising around Minneapolis, head to John's Antiques on 7th St in St Paul, right down by the Excel Center. They have wonderful vintage lighting.
