update: I called one of the people who replied to my ad and the man has a 40 gal propane but is converting to gas. I guess that it the type of person who would want it. I think he has to pay a fair amount to get everything converted (valves and stuff.) He wants mine and will sell his. He was willing to commit to it and get it Friday, but I asked him to come to verify that it works. I would really hate it if it didn't work once he got it home.

Yes, it is possible to do this. Be sure to drain it before moving. It would be pretty heavy. Plus, draining it gives it a chance to clean out the junk that collects on the bottom of the tank

I think it's nice that you're concerned about people of lesser means. More people should feel that way.

Your 8 year old water heater is likely closer to its last day than to its first. Why not just give it to him? That'll leave him a few hundred more bucks to spend when that old one dies. If he's taking it away, that saves you money, doesn't it?

Snidely, I did consider giving it away, but I am a somewhat suspicious person and I don't want to "give" it away to some one who just intends to scrap it, or to some rich family for their rental property. My contractor is supposed to haul it away or the township will pick it up. I just hope the plumber isn't annoyed at having to carefully remove it. I should be able to include the current gas shutoff valve which might help him too. I'll see what feeling i get when I meet him. I googled him and I know he works on boats. The motor home might be a summer place...if not, then being nice and giving it to him just might be the right thing to do!
