Help with tricky Master window treatments! long w/Photos

Hi everyone~ we just got new windows and our ugly blinds do not fit back inside the window frames. darn, i'm so broken up about it, lol.

DH and i want to get something that would be room darkening because DH thinks he might sleep better if it were darker. the blinds aren't very good at blocking the light! Also, our neighbor's house is very very close, and their back porch light shines right into our window when they have it on (often enough to be annoying). privacy is a concern because their house is so close!

i was thinking I would get three long rods and have blackout drapes and sheers behind. BUT the tricky part is the balcony door (we RARELY open it) and the teeny windows beside the fireplace. how to do drapes over those? I don't care if the door is covered.

also tricky is cathedral ceiling, so the ceiling isn't in the same place above all the windows. so where to mount the rods?

*Please excuse the horrible mess, laundry on the bed and carts and piles in front of the fireplace...we still aren't back together after the construction...)* Hopefully i got the photos in here the right way and the right size...the preview looks OK. apologies if not.

Bed is across from the big window, to the left of the door.

Colors in the attached bath, just FYI

see how close the neighbors are!

the small windows beside the fireplace are 23" X 23". the big window is 47"tall X 71"wide.

whatever we get i want to be able to open the side windows (just to the right when you walk into the door) because there is some nice green out there and no view of the neighbor's house.

HELP!!! how would you do WTs in this bedroom? any links or photos highly appreciated; i am so out of my element with decorating (obviously). adjoining bathroom is newly redone with espresso/almost black cabinet, white marble counter and gray slate. bedroom is currently soft green and will someday get repainted to a warm med. gray, but not too soon. upholstered charcoal headboard is ordered. next big project is hardwood floor in bedroom and possibly changing the fireplace to slate to match the master bath, but those projects are a while off (gotta save up after new bath and windows...LOL). THANKS for any advice.

forgot to say, if it matters, we haven't really figured out bedding yet either. we have white comforters, and we haven't found duvets we like yet. i bought Ikea purple Karit bedspread to go on top but it isn't really wide enough for our king bed. anyway, it'll probably be a solid color, but i'm still looking. :)

    thanks for reading.

My first thought was that roman blinds might work for the 3 different windows (small, larger and the door window). If they are custom made, black out fabric can be sandwiched in between the fabric. If it were me, I would make the romans a neutral color (something to match the trim) and then start add panels to the larger windows and a valance to the door. The panel and valance fabric can coordinate with your bedding. I will be anxious to hear what others suggest-your room is challenging.

My DD's MBR had a mix of those small windows with a larger one and she put wide plantation shutters on the small and drapery panels on the larger. It looked great and the shutters seemed to close tightly enough to block out street lights. Sorry I don't think I have a picture. I don't know how that would work with your 2" blinds already on the door, but think it would still work.

I am not sure what to do with the windows, but I wanted to say that I love your new bath--the flooring and backsplash are great!

I think I would leave the blinds on the door--they look fine in the pic and I think that they blend in and no one would notice them one way or the other.

Blackout panels would work on the larger window. If you do ones with grommets, you don't need the sheers--you can easily pull the panels accross a metal rod. I personally wouldn't do the sheers in your room as I think sheers are more traditional and your windows are more contemporary.

As for the little windows--I think I would try to find an inside mount shade or treatment that shows as little as possible when not pulled down. Or just leave them without treatments if it doesn't bother your husband too much.

    Good luck!

    thanks for the responses!

ratherbesewing, i like the idea of roman shades, although the word "custom" makes me nervous--that sounds expensive!! would you leave the little windows with nothing over the shades? would that look funny/unbalanced if there are panels on the big window and door?

sujafr, i wish i could see a photo of your DD's room with the shutters! i wonder if they'd be room darkening enough? also i wonder how they attach? there is no room to mount them inside.

kristinekr, thank you for the bathroom compliments! we LOVE how it turned out! now we have the bug to do the rest of the house. :) I didn't think of the grommets without sheers, because I need *something* behind the curtains when i pull them aside so i don't see the neighbors house (or they don't see me). what would you suggest if not sheers? do you think it would look ok to have panels on the one window and not the others? i don't think i can do an inside mount because there's only 3/4-inch of space for the hardware. i'll have to look into it.

    THANKS.
