When I want a lighter color I ask them to mix in half the color. I suppose this would be the 50%. I am so lucky. The guy in Wally world has been through 3 houses, in 8 years, with my crazy painting requests.

Yes, you ask for 50% of the formula. The pigment has to be mixed into the same base, which is why you can't just add white.

I have done that with a dark based color and adding white to it muddied the true color and it was really rather awful.

If both have a light base it might work. Give a small batch a try and do a test board of it. It is likely to change the color in a way you might not like. 50% strength is better unless you are just wanting to use up what you have.

Suggest doing a test board.

For more info, I was thinking about doing this in a small 8x8 bathroom that will have tile to wainscotting height and an angled ceiling. I was thinking of a color along the lines of BM Quiet Moments (although I'll have to test samples in the space when we get drywall up ... Quiet Moments may be too green and I may need to look for a grayed light blue) and then doing the ceiling in 25% or 50% of the wall color.
