Trim dilemma in old spanish home
Comments (67)Well in Fallbrook, at least, our prices have dropped a lot. The rest of San Diego and Orange County prices are still stupid high. But frankly, if you can stand a fixer upper, you can get some great deals in Fallbrook. Though we're in the County of San Diego, this little village seems like we're in our own little world. Lots of celebrities have houses here. Jason Mraz, Tom Selleck, Rita Coolige and other people like famous authors, etc. No one wants Fallbrook to change. And we all work hard to keep it from growing into a big place. We're still under County rules because we've never officially become a city. As you know we have the Mediterranean climate here all year round. Might think about coming back now before everything gets crazy expensive again....See MoreHow do I hide this ugly box?
Comments (90)I get that utility workers need to access the boxes. But honestly what is wrong with making them look nice, instead of a huge eye sore in one's yard... What Tracey P posted above, looks pretty sweet. It makes an otherwise UGLY utility box and blends it and makes it easy on the eyes. We have one in our front yard to the side and I'm half tempted to painted it a lighter shade of green so it blends in with the grass... it's currently painted an ugly dark green that just stands out compared to anything else in the yard. -Nigel...See MoreWhat do I do with this fireplace????
Comments (37)Sorry to dredge up an old thread- I'm back to working on this room. I ended up going with brown leather storage ottomans- (1) because there are no sharp edges and (2) because we can use some more storage as we have six kids and no basement. I'm feeling really drawn to white (I know, crazy, as I mentioned I have six kids) sheepskin rugs. I'd get two 6x8 and continue with the symmetrical look of the space. Aside from the practicality of white with this many kids (they rarely use this room- there is no tv), am I crazy for wanting sheepskin in the subtropics? I really want to add some texture with so much smoothness (leather and travertine) and sheepskin seems to do this. I prefer the look of white, especially since this room needs to be lightened up artificially (there is one tiny window- even in the midst of Florida summer, this room gets no direct sunlight). The other option would be a natural fiber rug like jute or seagrass. Originally I was going to put that in the tv room and didn't want to repeat, but I've since decided jute is too coarse for the tv/family room. Also, because of the space, I basically need a 7' square rug and an 8x10. I can't have anything with an obvious pattern because of the way the rugs will be laid (not a lot of 7' square options, so I'd go with possible another 8x10, just oriented the other way so it'll fit). Two 6x8 sheepskins would give me adequate floor coverage. HELP! Opinions please before I click buy....See MoreYour Best Tip for Moving into your First Home?
Comments (104)If your talking about the actual moving experience. go to the liquor store and get smaller boxes. They are not as heavy to fill and if you happen to have books, they are a boon. If they have boxes with dividers they can be used for glasses or goblets. The first move we made I wrote what was in the boxes so I would know where they go. That was fine, but better and faster to put a number on all 4 sides of the box (so you can see it no matter which sides is out) and keep a spiral notebook with the list of things in the box and the number of the box. JUST DON"T LOSE THE NOTEBOOK! (yes, that IS the voice of experience)! You can put the room name such as Master Bedroom and then a number so you know at first glance what room the box goes in. And if you should lose the list at lest you have the boxes in the correct rooms. Put your hanging clothes into large garbage bags with the hangers at top and tied. I like the "stretchable" bags best. it keeps the clothing tighter together. Group about 10 items together, depending on the weight. Pack your dishes with styro plates and bowls or paper plates and bowls between them to prevent them from breaking. Again, smaller boxes are best for dishes because of the weight. You can save the paper plates after to be used for eating if you are the frugal type. Cut handle holes into the side of boxes to make them easier to carry. Just cut a rectangle leaving the top attached and fold the cardboard inside to make comfortable handles The last room to pack and first to unpack should be your bedroom. If you don't get finished in one day, you at least have a place to sleep. The next should be the kitchen. It has the most packing and unpacking and you can get a lot of boxes out of the way doing it ASAP. Plus you can then actually fix something to eat sooner....See MoreBumblebeez SC Zone 7
