Hibiscus

I have very bad luck with hibiscus,I cant understand why.As a child they seemed to grow like weeds and be constantly in flower, but now they seem very short lived and packed with problems. The only one that is thriving and I am glad of it,is one I brought back from Bali,a single small bright red,not at all pinky red but a bright post box red.

I am thinking that this might be one of the original rosa sinensis types or close to.Its very vigourous and blooms constantly. And I have many healthy cuttings already blooming.

Every-thing else starts loosing leaves after the first season and then die back from the tips of the branches.A cross setion of the stems reveals some browning. Also the leaves start deforming progressively before die back starts.Could this be the soil? I never realized they were so taxing.
