Being harrassed because of compost bin!

Unbelievable, isn't it!! Camden Council were offering free compost bins, so I got one....and the landlady THREW IT AWAY, withoout consulting me, because she said she didn't want a compost bin in the garden. I have told her that if it isn't replaced I will report it to the police as stolen.

Then she got someone to trim the hedge, and he left the hedge-clippings strewn all over the gravel and over my plants instead of doing the sensible thing and - yes - putting them in the compost bin!!!

Going to see a solicitor on Monday, are you surprised!!

Keep the faith. Composting will be compulsory soon :) Hang on, isn't Camden one of the councils that fines you now if you don't recycle?

Well, guess what's happened now.....she accused me of putting "plastic, non-biodegradable waste" [sic] in the bin. So I COULD sue her for libel as well as harassment, but I've been told it's very expensive to sue for libel.
The harassment has risen to intolerable levels, which I suppose is her intention.

Slander and libel cases are very difficult to win even if you have absolute proof, lots of reliable, honest and trustworthy witnesses and 100% watertight case. Even if you do win it can blacken your name in the future as much as if you didn't win.

I don't know what her intentions are but you have rights as a tenant, the council would definitely be my first port of call. I hope it works out well for you.

why dont you pop alont to citizens advice im sure they could help you out failing that would the land lady fit in a compost bin??

Litigation is great - if you're a lawyer. Other than that, it's always best to avoid court action if at all possible.

It may be a little late to respond, but...
1 Does the landlady live on the property, or have free right of entry according to contract?
2. Did she ask you to remove the bin before she got rid of it? DOes it state in the contract "no compost"? Was it doing any harm?
3. Does the awful baggage have any evidence of you putting non-bio-degradable waste in the bin? And is that against the law anyway?
4. How much damage was done to your plants? Document it and estimate the cost of replacement.
As suggested, speak to the Citizens' Advice Bureau first. Also, there may be a Tenancy Tribunal which will deal with the matter free.
Sorry - can't tell you any more as I haven't been in the UK for years. BUT good luck and don't give in to the bully!
