Perhaps a seedling of some sort of locust tree (Gleditsia or Robinia). Are there any locust trees in the vicinity?

Yes there are quite a few, I thought I was lucky, is this tree of any use at all as there are 4 or 5 of them quite close by

its apparently useful as a weed ..

you really answered the question yourself.. when you suggest.. they are seeding themselves all around
