I don't think so ken, the needles are not scaly and are actually pretty painfully sharp. They aren't much longer than eyelashes

Chinese juniper might also be possible there. That has a distinctive, somewhat unpleasant odor, frequently produces at least a proportion of needle-like leaves.

In urban areas here, where we do not have J. virginiana as a common native Chinese juniper is nearly always the one that comes up.

Yep Chinese juniper it seems to be, especially based on this picture from Wikipedia. It just hasn't gotten to that stage of growth on the right of this picture. And it does smell quite a bit which they didn't realize until they brought it in the house
