Craftsman tile question

I recently visited a friend who lives in a beautiful apartment in Chicago c. 1910. It has a classic craftsman fireplace with tile surround and large built-in bookcases. The tiles are square and have a matte finish; they're a beige-y or greige-y color, but on a few tiles--especially on the edges of the hearth--you can see a bit of light blue glaze.

My questions is whether it's possible all the tiles used to have a blue glaze. Could it have faded or worn off? Would tiles do that? I know that craftsman style tile might have had an uneven glaze as part of its style, but it seems unusual to have just a tiny bit of blue on a few tiles.

Any ideas? Sorry I don't have a photo since it's not my house. My friend was really curious about it since she respects the history of the place, but does not like the beige color they are now.
