    Any new wooden counter top needs to be sealed. I recommend 7 layers of Danish oil or Linseed oil. Osmo do a good oil for both floors and worktops. After each layer rubber down with a very fine metallic mesh. Then apply a new coat. Always oil timber. Even cutting boards.( olive oil) They last forever. Lacquers or varnishes only seal the surface and once that seal is broken water can seep in under the coat and damage the timber.

      What is the flooring? Wood? Laminate? Would it last as long as tile?

      Oak. Engineered. Yes.

      Oiled finish is best. I recommend Osmo oils.
