Need help redesigning living room around new rug!

Sterling Gray & Blue Area Rug by · More Info

A couple months ago I was inspired by the transformations I saw happening on Houzz. I looked at my surroundings and decided it was definitely due for a change. I started collecting inspiration photos and immediately fell in love with this rug.

Could you help me update my living room?

The poster board you see taped by the mantle is a paint color I'm considering - the ever-popular Revere Pewter. The sofa definitely needs to be replaced (worn) and I want the room to have a lighter feel overall.

I have already followed some advice given on other Dilemmas: Painted fireplace screen from brass/rust to black and done some decluttering. I've tried several times to move the beige chair closer to the sitting group. The other inhabitants (hubby and son) were not able to adapt to the change. There was a lot of running in to the newly placed chair and jumping over...

All suggestions welcome!
I'll post more photos in the comments.

The stool looks great! Just what the corner needed. And looking forward to the new shades! How fun and exciting to see it all come together.

I checked to make sure they were the right materials and that they weren't damaged from shipping. They look so pristine in their protective plastic coverings!

If I weren't concerned with privacy I'd start the process of removing the old drapes and hardware then sanding and priming and painting the moldings. I'd do a little each night and slowly make progress. I'm just not willing to live in a fishbowl for that long.

Yeah, I totally get that. Perhaps you could stick some newspapers (or something nicer) to the windows? If you did that just at the bottom part, you'd still have daylight coming in from above.

I don't know the extent of repairs you'll be facing, but when we removed our drapes to put up a shade in our dining room, I was kind of stunned at what a minor deal the repairs were. I was kind of expecting (and dreading) a lot of work and it turned out to be about 10 minutes overall. Of course, your situation might be very different.

Maybe I'll take down one panel tonight! I really would like to know how damaged the window moldings will be. These drapes have huge brackets that are secured to the moldings in multiple places. Fingers crossed...

    POOF!

Those suckers were not easy to get down. Serious screws and heavy-duty brackets. Oh and why do people paint over screw heads??

Window moldings will need a bit of love:

Taking a break to post this before hunting down my wood filler, sandpaper and primer.

    Yay! Fishbowl living!

I bet that feels fabulous, you could even scoot the sofa back some. Just tack up a sheet, no one will notice!

I guess I'm not overly sensitive to the fishbowl thing. My living room faces the street and I have no window coverings at all.

Just read the entire thread. I’m loving how this room is coming together. That new red table is my favourite thing in the room! Can’t wait to see the shades up. I do wonder if you will miss the coziness of drapes?

I love them too! The windows seem so much bigger. The color is perfect. I was worried that I would lose a lot of insulation without the drapes, but they seem to keep the cold out fairly well so far. Yay!

With the shades being inside mount there is a bit of room now between the windows and the sofa (15-in). I may grab a cheap sofa table to sit back there. My couch is 34-in tall. The window sills are 27.5-in tall. How tall should the sofa table be? Or should I just leave it empty?

  • babophz

Unless you want to put something ON the sofa table, I'd just leave it empty. Let it breathe :)
