Lighting suggestions for two story family room please

Two story family room needs lighting recommendations. Flat ceiling, two interior walls open to 2nd floor, back wall is all windows, side wall has 8 foot cement fireplace that goes up the entire 2 story wall with doors on either side to screened porch. I need task, ambiance and general lighting in the room. I plan to put small recessed LED lights in the ceiling (yes, two stories up). Not sure what kind of light they will provide but I want the ambiance of them anyway. I will have trim detail visually separating the lower floor from the upper floor and would like to have some sort of light that washes the wall on three sides. What is the most current thought on floor outlets? I hate to cut into floors but my sectional will be floating in the center of the room and will need lamps. I want to see how far I can get with the brilliant houzz community before I bite the bullet and hire a lighting consultant.

I try to never use floor outlets they are a pain if you ever want to change furniture placement or get new stuff and are never a plus if selling. My favorite lighting in these situaitons is cable lighting you put it at a level that you want can have different heads for different purposes I even drop heads for above end tables for reading and above dining tables. I use Tech I like it the best.When checking them out look for Kabeland go to their site for all the choices and any good lighting store should carry it.

Good morning, I just got done doing a similar room with very high ceiling just like yours. We used Nora high hats 1250 lumen and they are also available in a 2000 lumen. We layered the lighting by using the high hats and using large hanging pendants and sconces on the wall. The sconces and pendants are beautiful for just lighting the room in general but when the 1250 high hats are turned on they illuminate the whole room. I think you need to prepare for plenty of light for when you really will need it because these are always fully dimmable. Pictures of this room will be available soon on our Houzz profile.
