depends where you would like to use it! I like keeping a touch of the past.. So would keep the fabric, as it looks as i'ts still in a good condition. Change the buttons! to colored ones and add few cushions to match the buttons, to make the chair look a but more lively. If you are going to change everything, it will not be anymore as the chair from your grandma... will lose its charm..if you know what I mean? Its a unique piece and keep as it is! Browse through French home interiors where they perfectly match old with new and keep the memories in its shapes :)

I have one very similar. Came with the original horse hair upholstery. Belonged to my great grandparents and my grandfather died 28 years ago at 101. It was first cream velvet in the master br now it is green corduroy in the family room. You can do any thing, it's a fun piece.

Keep in mind it's hard to make stripe look right with tufting. I would do a linen neutral on it and jazz it up with throw pillows. That way if you choose to use it in other places... You aren't we'd to the color but can change up pillows.

If you're keeping the diamond tuft (and I would), I wouldn't do a true geometric pattern or a stripe (herringbone, houndstooth, etc.). Animal print would work, or nubby woven, or any fun small or large irregular print. Anything that normally draws the eye up and down will look strange with the tufting.
