If row 1 ends with a p stitch, it will be a k stitch on the other side, so Row 2 will start with a k stitch.

It's a bit hard to see on the first couple of rows, but once your pattern is established it's very easy to see which are K and which are P.

Thanks for the help Donna, but I'm still confused. As you put it, shouldn't the directions read for the second row "K the purl sts and p the knit sts" or am I missing a turning stitch or something? I think I'd better look for some YouTube videos and/or quit overthinking things! lol Those are the directions for a rib knit, right? (so I'm sure to look for the right videos) Lake

The easier way to write the pattern is:

Row 1: K1, *P1, K1; rep from * to end of row

Row 2: P1, *K1, P1; rep from * to end of row

Repeat rows 1-2 for 1/1 rib.
