I would go with a half wall, as long as this is not a load bearing wall. That way, you do not have to worry about what to with the floor! You could have a nice counter on top where you could place food, if needed.

I'd leave it alone.This provides a more gracious dining feature, and the finish makes sense as is. A larger piece of artwork would look well. An island placed that close will open the view, but won't function terribly well.

If you decide to keep the wall,stain or paint it the same colour as the kitchen walls. The colour of the wood is dating it. And as others have said, larger art.
