Please advise how to best fix problem. Owner moved fridge to accommodate microwave shelf. Added counter on rollers. Would fridge be best moved back, with microwave installed above oven? Any ideas appreciated. Thank you so much! Room is 12 X 8 . Would use suggest bistro table in present fridge space. Any idea for extra counter use?

You are right StephE I agree and I went back and reread her post and it is a bit confusing. So, we shall ask! Are you planning on gray new furniture for your living room?

So I also suggested to wait until moving in, settle, and buy some new furniture, and she stated that she already posted pictures of her furniture and that she doesn't plan on changing that. Fair enough, but things will obviously be a bit different in her new place, such as that fireplace and tile she has pictured in her current LR. It's hard to ignore certain elements in a picture. Also, how much light is the new place getting, which direction does it face? This will change the impression of paint tone and depth.

Flo, what about SW North Star, Lullaby or Mountain Air. Hint of grey, hint of the right color blue....as best as I can tell.

I think those will go with her furniture.

IMO, that's a lot of blue, but I'm not a Pro. What about Balboa Mist or Abalone?

    Mountain Air

BM Balboa Mist (fav of the two)

The balboa mist is interesting. The others may be too much blue. You are right.

They might be options, just need more info from Rosemary. Where are you Rosemary. Are you keeping living room, blue furniture? If so, I withdraw SW Sea Salt. But if you are going gray then we need to see that before we can give you good thoughts on wall colors. Hope you are enjoying your weekend. Talk soon!

Wow...this has been quite a read and frankly need to do a lot more research at the Paint Store. No Flo,no intention to change LR furniture. It is in excellent shape and extremely comfortable. I may have confused you when I mentioned changing the den Hide-abed as it is Queen size and I feel too large for the space. The wall it would sit against is the one facing the LR and the pattern and colour is not a good fit with the LR. So,now I will go back and try your original suggestion of BMBright And Early extended over to the pass through wall. I will take arm covers from sofa, chairs and try to coordinate the best match in the white pattern of the sofa for walls. I will also call Painters for their recommendation of a Specialist to check out the space. Because ceilings will definitely need painting in white it is just simpler to have it done with the space empty. Hopefully the painters will start with those and because we will then have occupancy ( furniture being held on Van 2 days) we can bring some small testers and perhaps try right on wall. I will tend to grey in Baths because of the small amount of tile that is that colour and I definitely want to downplay the slight splash of pink that is in them. Again many thanks to everyone..don't worry it is too expensive for us to not make sure it is right before we start!
  • Steph

Yes it's definitely easier to paint the ceiling with the room empty. I completely agree with that. I broke a new computer monitor while trying to get each corner. It's one of the suckiest tasks I've done.

I wouldn't take cues from the existing bath and tile color. Don't push too hard to use grey regardless. I wish you luck.

A lot of the Living Room photos that I am looking at with blue/white furnishings and accessories seem to use white on the walls (?)
  • Kathi Steele

I think grey may not be right with your blue and white furniture. I think you will have to pick a tone of the blue or go with a blue undertone white.

Does every room have to be the same color?

Good idea to paint ceiling first. Let them do that and then do the walls.

Couple of tips for ceiling. Any "off white" you might choose for ceiling has some tint of color in it and can tend to look "off". With your Owl Gray, that could tend to make it look "muddy", so just use their Base Paint Super White (there is no tint in that base color) for your ceilings if you want nice white ceilings. You have a challenge for sure. If it were me, I would get the ceilings done in the Base Super white, and I would make up about 4-6 "sample boards" one of the Owl Gray and several other tones you like and the minute I had access to that condo, I would be in there with those sample boards and seeing what they do in that light. I would also do a board in their "plain Base Super White" to see what that does in there too. I do not envy you for sure. I just really worry about Owl Gray with the light and affect of all those glass windows on your colors. Then later, you can bring in a accent wall here and there and perhaps in the kitchen without too much cost or effort. Just hate you selecting colors, while the "moving van" is waiting! Ugh. Been there, done that. No fun for sure. Best of luck to you!

Seeing your photos a minute ago, I would be very tempted to just go white walls. Especially, if you have to select just one color. yikes, my stomach hurts just thinking about your situation.

Thanks Kathy and Flo! I am thinking that white will be best in the LR and Hallways and will do boards as you suggested Flo. I am thinking Grey Owl might be nice in the Bedroom as it is a switch up from what I had and I quite like crisp white and grey bed linens...that is the least expensive room to decorate! It may be nice to bring it in to the Master bath toned down with some white. Again, thank you for the great advice!

An absolutely beautiful day on the West Coast today and we were fortunate to able to do a final walk through of space with painted boards to place in rooms. I really am happy with the chosen colours and the help given to me by Janet ,a local colour consultant. We have decided on BM OC24 for the LR DR and hallways. The kitchen, den,Bedroom and ensuite plus powder room for now will be BM OC28 Collingwood. With trim and doors in Simply White I am pleased with the light from those lovely large windows and how very bright it was. It perhaps seems understated but I really think that with with furniture and area carpet it will be a beautiful space. The good news is that as deceiving as the kitchen looks in the pictures the fridge will go back in to the original spot and the rolling cupboard will fit in well with a flip up back or side . Thanks everyone and have a very Merry Christmas!

Winds Breath and Collingwood are going to give you a lovely neutral backdrop for your blue and white! Yellow will still work with them but you aren't tied to it. They are proven neutrals and will allow for flow but give some variation. Fresh!

Thank you Flo! Probably most stressful thing we have had to deal with in in a very long time...but we are in and boxes are unpacked! The West Coat of Canada is experiencing a very unusual weather pattern and we have been snowed in since our arrival (a move that was only 5 blocks away!) Further complicated by my spouse coming down with pneumonia we have not been able to do any post move shopping, errands and so all the little things that need to be replaced ( ironing board holders, broom holders etc.) have not. However snow days gave us time to stay put and rethink furniture placement, hanging of mirrors, pix etc. I am now very anxious to look for some area rugs and dispose of extra wall hangings etc. But must be patient. We are very happy with the paint choices and ceilings, trim etc. So fresh! I think we are going to love this much smaller space and considering the health concerns we are happy that did it while we were able. Thank you so much for your valuable input...I will post some photos once we are able to complete some incidental shopping.

So good to hear from you and so sorry for hubby's health crisis. 78 here in Houston today, in Feb.! We will pay for this though. I am so happy you are pleased so far, if only with what you have done so far. Just getting unpacked is a huge accomplishment. It is good to sit back and ponder before placing nail holes in walls because once a hole, always a hole! Looking forward to seeing more pics in the Spring! Of course, Spring here is about a week away. Everything is recovering from our winter, Jan. 7 & 8th It got to 20 both nights. Some kids here had tee shirts made up saying "We survived the winter of 2017, Jan 7 & 8th!" That was cute. Take care and get well.

Previous pictures of both houses shown were professional photos by realtors. My phone camera certainly doesn't have that wide lens. Just a few vignettes to how we settled in to our much smaller space and the simple changes we have made by painting and switching kitchen appliances. Still a work in progress but we love it! Any critique welcome...just not the photographer! ;)

Darling! So happy to see you getting settled in and you have done a wonderful job of putting creative touches to the things you love in your new home. Great job! One small comment and perhaps this is in the planning stage. Can you switch the refrigerator door so it opens the other way? Or possibly get a new one! French Doors would be so good in that kitchen. But really happy for you overall. I would also love to see how that wonderful balcony is coming along!!

One more little thing, the picture hanging over the small cabinet in the living room with the lamp, you could lower that maybe 3". It is OK, to "layer" lamps and paintings a little bit. Great place. Love the two light wing chairs in the den. Perfect. You rock girl!!

Plan to replace kitchen floor. Colour suggestions to contrast with cabinets? Wall colour does not show well in these pix...it is BM Collingwood OC-28. Quite like it. Also painted out the tan accent tiles with Rustoleum White and can not tell they were any different ( only 10 )

Our West Coast weather sure has not been conducive to Balcony shopping this winter. Hopefully Spring is just around the corner. We need to choose a small round table that is weather resistant ,comfortable and that can be viewed all year...don't really want to view a cover from the LR. This is the fun part!

Thank you..some units do have that but then have lost all cabinets above sink. I have a tough time parting with serving pieces. Have really downsized cabinets already. Do find the pass through convenient though. We now eat in the dining room and use the silver! Wise words from Erma Bombeck!

french door refrigerator. · More Info
Like this. Now in your space, it might be better to just get the door with hinges on the left side. Just make sure there is sufficient room for the doors to open properly. I have a French Door style and love it. My daughter has one like above and she loves the two drawers. So, several styles to check out.

My SIL the gourmet cook loves hers -- it doesn't have the external snack/deli drawer but I think it has one inside. I think I would be frustrated by the thing I was after always being in the other half! -- but I do love my full-width deli drawer inside my one-door newish fridge, and its humidity controlled produce drawers REALLY WORK! keeps fresh food edible better than any fridge I've ever had!

As a scientist, I have always thought the freezer on the bottom and a drawer type made more sense ("heat rises" and all that)... but for some reason those units seem to cost way more than the equivalent in a top-freezer.

Thanks Leeza. The present fridge seems to be working perfectly for us but if it needs replacing we would certainly keep the French door in mind!

Reuse the rolling drawer unit. See if you can find a large piece of butcher block for the top, wide enough to provide overhang for a couple of stools to fit underneath.

Farrow and Ball does an unusual color called Borrowed Light. It is hard to peg, because it changes shade throughout the day, but is a very very pale blue that lightens up anywhere it's painted. Benjamin Moore can make a cheaper color match.

Tile in kitchen / Cork in kitchen .. you might like cork in your kitchen since it can be keyed to the tone of the wood floor but it is not hard to stand on and it cleans up beautifully . . .it would flow to the eye but is a different texture. If you go to tile, you want a larger format stone look that echos travertine I think . . neutral cream against the white cabinets .. for my money, I think you would be very pleased with cork there.

Thank you! This was also suggested by my husband. Somehow,we are now used to eating in the dining room and enjoying the view. As for the roll counter I do find it great for storage of a few cookbooks, flowers etc.
The kitchen painting is complete and BM Collingwood goes especially well with present countertop. I do appreciate your advice!
