Choosing paint color...Thunder or Revere Pewter?

EmmaNJ

Which color is best? left (Thunder) or right (Revere Pewter), both by Benjamin Moore? This is for a basement room with no natural light. Couch and area rug photo included. Room will also have an air hockey table and fooseball. Thanks!!

Pewter is definitely the more popular shade, but they're both perfectly good.

IMO a dark basement is best painted in a color that gives the illusion of light instead of gray which does not.The room in this pic has no windows and people often did not realize it was windowless I think if it had been painted gray it would have had a very dull appearance

On my monitor there is no difference, I have revere in my kitchen so I guess I like that out of the two, but I agree with Pat maybe something a bit more colorful would be in order{just when you got it down to two choices]

I tend to agree with Patricia, but trying to stay within the choices poster gave. I personally don't like the grays at all. With that floor there is a lot of gold/yellow undertones, so perhaps something like BM Gray Cashmere might walk the line to get a brighter and more pleasing combination?

Going on the assumption that you have recessed lighting in the ceiling: Try B.M. cloud white….the entire space, ceiling in flat; walls in satin; trim in semi-gloss.

I have used Thunder…it is a gorgeous color, but needs lots of light to make it work. I have used Revere Pewter, and that, too needs natural light…

I do not think either will work in your basement.

But, I can see this white with your sofa and rug…bring up the rug colors onto the sofa with throw pillows

I agree with going lighter and something less gray that fits better with the floor.

Here's Thunder with Bamboo flooring. It looks warmer in person. This was taken with overcast in a North facing room. I would go lighter in a basement.. A decorator picked it out. Seems a tad too dark, but looks great with art & floor.

If the photo was taken under the lighting conditions you have installed in the basement then either choice would work. If you had to enhance the lighting that will be present then I might consider something else.

Thanks, everyone, for your comments! This room will have a man cave feel to it (cozy and masculine) and will post final pics overy weekend.

I prefer Thunder in your space...it has just enough visual interest to look like something other than just gray or just beige. In your space Revere Pewter looks like a very boring beige (no offense). I love your flooring!

Folks, there is no natural light in this basement, and Revere Pewter will not do well with no natural light. Even with artificial light it can get muddy for sure.

I painted one bathroom Lamb's Ear, it's a light griege, looks great in my dark room. Got it in BM Aura, but it's a Valspar color. Easy to do if you go to a Ace with both. White will open up the room, but I think it will seem warmer if you at least find a white with a bit of color.

    An example I found

Thunder is a gorgeous color, but, as I said, it needs lots and lots of natural light to be its best. I used it in a large room, with three walls of huge windows, looking out over the ocean. It was drop dead fabulous. But, only, with best light will that color work for you in a basement.

Do you have what I call (erroneously, because I can’t think of the correct word) drop boxes in the ceiling for plumbing?

i was raised calling them soffits.

Soffits is a term used, generally in concert with the term fir-downs. Fir-downs are usually "utilitarian" and soffits are generally the overhang portions of roofs with gutters on them. At least that is the lingo we use here.

its regional i think. i had never heard of bulk heads or fir downs before coming to houzz last year.

upstate new york, and new england we roll with soffit.

The one on the left looks just grey, on right looks grey but with a hint of yellow, so I vote for that one. If it's a man cave then let hubby decide! This way u can blame him if it doesn't work out. Lol. :)

Fir down; fur down…you say potato and I say potahto,,,I have never heard that before. Is it a regional term? And, which is correct? Wow! Thanks, houzz. Another learning experience.

In my whole life I have never heard the term fir down but I agree soffits are usually exterior and bulk heads are in the kitchen as a rule more often than anywhere else

  • Judy Mishkin

soffits are the exterior name in new england (and upstate new york, where i was born) as well. i was lucky to be born, raised and live doubly soffitted. and thank heavens, smooth walls are the norm here as well. 'knock down' was another word i'd never heard of til houzz... although i'd certainly experienced the 'weird bumpy walls' in hotels in florida.

Funny how these terms differ from place to place. But, what is clear is plumbing and other runs in these interior "boxes" are ugly and not needed in most of today's designs. I have had no client in past 15 years say "oh, I want that box up at the ceiling in my kitchen!" lol.

A bulk head here on Cape is either the appendage which leads you to the cellar or the build (conservation approved, yikes) which protects your property from the ocean.

It's sounds like this is going to be a living space, with lots of fun and company (judging by fooseball and air hockey table)l With that in mind, I would go for the lighter shade.

Great job. Yes, Thunder is beautiful with those color floors. A designer picked that color for my living space for that reason. It's a tad on the dark side, and I'm worried I'll have to repaint for sale or rent of my condo, but heck it's just paint.

    Enjoy your space!

I'm thinking of using Thunder for my LR/DR. I have lots of windows and light, so it sounds like it might be a good choice. My other choices are Shale or Wish, looking for a beige gray as my kitchen is Annapolis Gray. My floors are a bit darker, English chestnut. What white trim would be the best to compliment Thunder?
