Need help choosing paint colors for our 70's colonial house

Margaret

We just purchased a 70's center hall colonial with white and black diamond accent ceramic tile. The ceramic floors run throughout the foyer, hallway, and kitchen. We need help choosing wall color for the foyer, hallway, and kitchen. The kitchen cabinets are white formica with black knobs and blue-grey counter-tops. Do we paint all these rooms the same color? Please help, we are not sure what to do.

I'm not sure if these picture are helpful. I will try to upload better pictures if necessary.

I think the kitchen entrance would be a good point for starting a different color. I'm not sure of the decorating style that I like. I want to say that I like a contemporary/ modern. Can you suggest a style that may work with this house?

I think the cabinets and floor have the same undertones.

The black and white floor will go with most colors. The house would look great with transitional furniture leaning toward contemporary. I suggest you start by painting the bedrooms whatever colors you choose to go with new bedding.

If you are planning to buy all new upholstered furniture and rugs for the downstairs, pick colors from those for your new wall paint.

Check out SW Collonade Gray. Similar to BM Revere Pewter, but it doesn't pull quite as green. Not sure if it would work with black & white but it's a great neutral greige!

I want to thank you all for your suggestions and helpful advice.

I was considering a gray tone but also was very concerned that it would not work with the black and white floor. I need to decide on the colors soon but I find the floor so overwhelming and don't know where to start. I'm wondering if I should just keep it simple and stay with a tan or beige color.

Look for inspiration pictures--google "black and white floors" and see what appeals to you. Consider existing furniture, rugs and whatever that is on the stairs.

I can see an oriental rug on the foyer floor with walls taken from the rug. Red, cobalt blue, teal or almost any blue/green would be stunning. Don't default to beige or gray unless that is truly what appeals to you.

This looks like my dining room color - Cityscape by Sherwin Williams.

    Some other pics I like:

I like the 2 tone as well.

Janco, thank you for for your advice. I was feeling overwhelmed and ready to give up on color. Katy the inspirational pictures are beautiful. The first picture is my favorite. I'm going to purchase a sample of the cityscape today. I'm also planning to use the two tone in the dinning room with some slpashes of red (runner on stairs and some artwork) throughout the foyer and dinning room. What do you think about the red?

    I greatly appreciate the help!

I'm not a big fan of red, but if you love that color, go for it. I don't know where you live, but Sherwin Williams will help you pick out colors if you buy (I believe) a $75 gift card. They will send a color specialist to your house. What I did was pay for an interior designer to come in and advise. She was $125 an hour, and I just needed an hour with her. She did great picking out colors and giving me advice on the rest of the house, so maybe look into that.
