I’m still new to this so take my advice with a grain of salt. But you and I have similar zones (6a Massachusetts), so perhaps my method will work for you, which is most similar to your Method 2 option. I put my tubers on a long and narrow planter, and plan to put the planters outside on the deck or near the fence.

I advocate for planters rather than the ground because my experience was back breaking, trying to remove tubers from hard clay soil before winter. Now all I have to do is empty and clean a couple planters, dry everything out and re-store them each year, woo no more digging!

As for the method-

I laid the tubers down in the planter and made sure no tubers were touching in case one of them got rot. I used a ground peat moss medium and piled it about 4 inches high. It keeps them dry and warm, they are in my heated garage, within a cabinet, which stays 30-50 degrees in winter. The tops of the planters are uncovered so there’s no moisture locked in to create rot.
