We used Alpine quartz and white glass subway tiles but our cabinets were dark almost black.

We went for black and white marble backsplash, with black stone countertops.

I am redoing a kitchen and fell in love with Silestone, Lyra, which looks like marble but is quartz. I am ordering dark gray cabinets, which almost look black. Adding gray or black subway or glass backsplash (haven't decided yet) . With white cabinets, dark gray or black glass would look stunning!

Zodiaq also has a Carrera option called Coarse Carrera that will give you similar patterning as the Lyra without the cost. Calcatta is gorgeous, but most times out of the budget.

See this image - if you're starting with white, and want a little bit of color try for a thin gray mosaic. These are sold in sheets, so they'll be easier to install than broken joint subway tile. Also, the look is super contemporary (borderline modern), especially that they're stacked on top of each other. This might be a good direction to start in. Best of luck!
