Turning Dining Room into Multi-purpose room

I live alone, usually the only person that is with me is my grandson. I no longer need a dining room table full time. I am looking for a small table that I can extend when others are here, or even if I have to add a folding table for that time would be fine. The room is not large, it's 11 x 13'. I'm wanting to repaint, make the hardwood floor either lighter or darker...it's oak now, and have the room have a Southwestern vibe. I'm having trouble picturing what kind of table to get, what color wood for the Southwestern look that I want, the wood in the new table, maybe a console or buffet type piece on the one wall. Right now I have a dark antique table and china cabinet. I love the two pieces but am tired of them. So, envisioning a small comfy chair, a round? or am open to suggestions for the shape of table and type, buffet or console table on one wall with art over. Something along those lines. Any help would be so appreciated.

In addition to the pictures, what purpose do you see for the room? Why do you want a small comfy chair in the space?

Oh my...I LOVE the bottom picture especially. Love the turquoise from the first one. My biggest hurdle is the table, finding the right one and the wood tone that would convey SW. I do love that last picture. Thanks for the link as well...I'll check it out...and thanks for getting me started. An idea book is what I need to start.

Oh, the small comfy chair...not a requirement but I don't have a place in my house that is *my* favorite place, and I was thinking if I could decorate this like I said I'd like to, that maybe if there was room for a small chair I would have a favorite place. Purpose of the room if room for the small chair, would be a sitting area/eating area as well with the small table. I don't have an eat in kitchen. I will get pictures together.

I looked online for Southwestern furniture, and there is not a huge selection. What I did find was expensive.

If you look at the background on the chair above, you will notice that the floor is just a regular natural color oak floor. Your floor might be okay as it is, especially if you use an area rug for your southwestern theme. Area rugs are an easy way to create the Southwestern mood, while eliminating the need to refinish the floor. Home Depot has many suitable rugs online at an economical price.

Check out some local consignment and thrift stores...the heyday of Southwest everything was about 30 years ago, so I have noticed some really high quality stuff coming in to ours, in Colorado, as people change out the stuff they inherited.

When you say multipurpose room, first question that comes to my mind is: what do you like to do? Is there any particular activity your enjoy doing?

Do you like drawing, dancing, sewing, writing, doing yoga, making natural cosmetics, playing an instrument, reading, taking photos, making videos etc..?

I would start by identifying things you enjoy doing and plan a room with that in mind.

It's great to have some extra space, why not use it to create a corner that makes our creative juices flow? :)
