I got the best compliment for a terminal patient today. Him and his wife, married for 36 years, he is totally dependent on her. While she was meeting with the medical interns I stopped in his room to check on him. He was calling her name, told him that she would be right back but could tell that he was getting antsy. I offered to hold his hands and sat with him. Started to ask him questions about him and her and assured him that she would be right back and would not dare leave him. I then offered to go look for her. I came back and told him that she would be right back. While I am holding his hand and stroking it, he started to calm down. I then offered him water which he drank. He started to calm down, then talked about his military service, told him how I had served too. Talked about his tv show, he said it was Gunsmoke and told him mine was Matlock ; he laughed at me. He then started to fall asleep. He was so peaceful but as soon as he heard her voice he woke. So I said to him, arent you suppose to be napping and for that brief moment I got him to laugh. Him and his wife thank me and he said it was something in my voice that was different and special, she said it was my laughter. Not trying to make myself feel better but it is times like this that I really love this internship.
