Your experience with Frederic Mistral?

I’m wondering what others have experienced with Frederic Mistral bloom production? Last year I planted an own root one in the ground. It seems vigorous and has maybe a few buds just forming, but not many yet. However, very recently it has put on a lot of new growth, the kind that is usually indicative of blooms forming. I think this rose is so gorgeous, but so far I haven’t had one that’s been very productive. This one did have a few blooms last year, so I am hopeful. What’s been your experience? I’m sure I’ve asked this question before, this is my third try with this rose!

Frederic has a few weird habits. Sometimes when he grows a lot, some of it does back. I had two, and both were not generous with their blooms. The blooms are very large and sometimes that takes a lot of energy from the rose and they don't give you many. The two lasted for 5 years and then were dropped kicked over the fence. It was his strong fragrance that sold him to gardeners. IMO Memorial Day has replaced him. It has an even stronger Damask fragrance.

Thank you oldrosarian! My bush is very healthy, I’ll see how well it blooms this season. I have Memorial Day too, love it, and the fragrance is just as you described. I guess I’m a collector of pink rises and want them all to be good ones, but I might have to face reality with FM.

It's not my favorite pink rose. It does not produce large quantities of blooms, but it's really tough and sturdy. Mine seems to be indestructible. It's weathered many cold winters. I think mine is grafted, I bought it so many years ago and I cannot recall from whom...

My plant puts out an incredible amount of blooms in big flushes. It was a grafted body bag plant from Home Depot a long time ago. It made a big rounded shrub. Mine suffered some cold damage and I had to cut out a lot of it but it is back. My problem with this plant is the blackspot. It's beautiful and fragrant and a little tender. Interesting that it does well in your cold winters, Krista.

I've been pleasantly surprised with this rose. It's compact at 2-3 feet tall. It defoliates from blackspot. It does get all day sun.

In my CA garden, Frederic is an, inconsistent, performer. When he is good, he is AMAZING. Mine is about 4' x 3'. Doesn't flush like pics below very often, but I have at least a few blooms about 50% of the growing season. And production does seem to vary year to year. Last year was incredible. This year, he's starting a little weak through the first flush. But - I wouldn't be without him.

My plant is own root. It did not do much at all for the first couple of years but leaped during its third year. It also took three years for it to have its first blooms. It really tried my patience in that respect, and the spider mites seemed to love it. I was happy with the blooms, especially the fragrance. It does not have the quickest repeat but has abundant blooms (I slightly over feed it) to make up for that.
