That's a pretty serious scale insect infestation.

It was only that serious on two branches. I cut them off and tossed them.

You may still have eggs in the pot or soil

You have not completely gotton rid of them, trust us.

So is this plant a goner? Should I toss it? Not getting a good feeling about this from the feedback.

Jim, never toss a tree if it is infested at the point in which it is treatable..

If it were my tree, I would take it out of that pot, rinse the pot and old mix off, then re pot into a fresh mix and then spray the tree with a good horticultural oil to suffoctae them or use a systemic pesticide.

I used to have a LOT of scale on my yard citrus. It was even attacking a really big ornamental pear tree...leaves had wax scale allll over them. I ultimately took out the ornamental pear because it was a sickly tree but I also begin treating my citrus with a home-made horticultural oil using a nifty backpack spray rig that would get to most of the high parts of my citrus. Now the citrus is so high I would need a ladder to reach the tops but I treated for a couple of years, once or twice a year, and now I find scale here and there but not at bad levels. I haven't treated in probably 4 years. I plan to treat this fall/early spring to keep ahead. Point is, horticultural oil really does great! Be sure to read up on mixing, types of oils to use, detergents that are good and not good, and what time of year to treat to keep from damaging your tree with the oil. I don't have any experience with Malathion. Anyone have any experience with Pyrethrum for spot treatments?

Scale will not be in or on the soil, or on the pot.

Is the plant outdoors? If not, move it outdoors while the weather is suitable so that beneficial insects have a turn at the scale. Even so, keep an eye out because they have a head start.
