Updating Front Entry

Madison Geiger

Looking for some ideas on how to update my front entrance. I have a single sidelight and am unable to add one to the left of my front door due to a closet. Would like some ideas on how to update the look to help balance out the appearance. Was thinking about installing louvered shutters on each side of door which would cover the sidelight but still allow some light to come in. Any other ideas are welcome! Note: this is an older picture- door is now painted Red with brown trim .

The biggest problem with the sidelight is the white trim which draws attention to it. How about painting the trim the same or near the same color as the base of the home? Also to the left as far as balance, the plant is a good start, but how about a tree or plant base with some iron work to give it height?

Maybe frame the whole thing the same with a panel under the window.

Love your door color. agree with above comments paint sidelight house color and get a much taller plant for the left. You could also get a rug with the green color of your door in it

Agree with the above comment, but would see if the sidelight could be removed entirely. Also consider having the two sides of the door wired for impressive lanterns. Then add a door with quite a bit of glass if you require more light in the foyer. There are too many knee-knocker items on the porch. You need some statement pieces scaled to the size of the porch.

Agree that you could draw less attention to it by painting the trim the same color as the exterior wall.

You might also consider creating a kind of faux window on the exterior wall -- the shape without the glass -- for the opposite side of the door.

A wood frame (sans glass) that is the the same size and shape of the sidelight could be affixed to the wall on the opposite side of the door for symmetry -- and could be used as a base to which you could attach a hanging bracket for a potted plant or your favorite wind chimes. Plywood could be used in lieu of glass if there is no stud behind the exterior wall material to which to attach your bracket.

If you added 2" deep framing boards around your existing sidelight and created a matching faux window, you could add glass to your faux window with blinds behind the glass. You'd want to attach it with screws so you could remove it if the interior needed attention (such as from condensation or insects -- you could even attach it with a hinge to open it instead of removing it entirely. (It could be a place to hide a spare key.)

    Really like your porch.

Denita's idea of changing the material of the exterior wall in the indented area is well worth considering. Like the look of wood in the pics she posted and it very much does make the entry the focal point.

Since the smooth exterior wall across the entire porch is different from the horizontal siding to the left of it, IF you do change (the material around the door -- if cover it with wood -- then you might want to consider making that change to all of that wall that is that same kind of material rather than end up with three different exterior wall materials.

I, too, hope you'll post "after" pics.

Along the lines suggested, have you considered removing current door and sidelight and replacing it with one larger pivot door in wood and glass. You can select woods and style and add use wood on side walls of entry area.

    • Paint the frame of the sidelight to match the wall so it doesn't stick out
    • Replace the outdoor carpet with something that complements the door color
    • Select a low light plant and teal green ceramic planter
    • Replace the outdoor light
    • Select some teal colored comfortable outdoor lounge seating
