The areca palm likes bright light with little to no direct sun. A large north-facing window has the equivalency of medium shade. That doesn't mean this palm won't grow here, but it may not thrive. Day length may be sufficient for healthy growth during late spring and summer. But, the shorter days of fall and winter may not provide enough light. It is often advisable to move house plants in and out of the best spots so none languish.
