What is your favorite mail-order source for roses? Preferably own-root

Aaron Rosarian Zone 5b

I wanted to create a list of US-based/accessible sources for mail-order rose plants. Someone on Houzz turned me on to A Reverence for Roses the other day and I found one I'd been searching for for months. I would love if people could add to the list so others can continue to find great roses. The ones I know of are:

Sometimes in Help Me Find you can find sources in the member comments also, but they're often years old.

Any to avoid? Any I'm blatantly missing? Good experiences? Bad experiences? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Annie's is great - be sure to get their glorious catalogue. If you live in the SF Bay Area, you can drive there and pick up your plants - the nursery grounds have lots of other plants which will entrance you and you will be stuck buying more!

So today I ordered a rose from Chateau De La Rose (https://musthaveroses.com/), it was a little bit of an impulse buy, I was looking for Reine Des Violet and they still had it. Anyone had any experience with them? They call themselves Chateau De La Rose but their URL states musthaveroses. Thanks!

I thought I was done buying roses, but are you ever? Ok, so I found on a rose facebook group that Macy's (yes Macy's) was selling some Parfuma series roses. So I checked it out and bought myself another 10 roses. The come is sets of two, so I only bought 5 different kinds. They were $23.00 for two, so not too bad. We will see what how they do :).

    Earth Angel Parfuma 2x

    Curly 2x

    Artic Flame 2x

    Bliss Parfuma 2x

Kristine LeGault 8a pnw I ordered from Hirts before I knew to look at Davesgarden.com or Garden.org for reviews. I am so glad you got great stuff from them! I know that people rarely post great reviews, so it is lopsided reviews usually. In my orders 50% totally failed or were DOA and 50% were great. Over the last 4 years, I tried again, same outcome. I checked reviews and most people had the same issues as I did. The amount of bad reviews and the 10+ name changes and my horrible experiences with CS and there are so many places to get high quality that I feel like it is important to warn people.

One I haven't ordered from, but I love what they do. https://plantingjustice.org/product-category/roses/ If you need Playboy or Altissimo Rose for $12 (Shipping makes it about $30) They still have it, but they are out of the Austins they carry. I can't tell if they are grafted or ownroot.

Roses Unlimited is my go-to! I live in NC so shipping is very reasonable. The roses are always a good size an the selection is fantastic.

I live in the same town as Witherspoon Roses and I'm not impressed with their rose-selling arm. They don't provide a lot of information easily on their website or in person--you can't search by breeder, they don't say if a rose is own-root versus grafted, etc. For the roses they ship, they get them wholesale in the winter and just repackage them. They also pot up wholesale roses and sell them for $$ in person.

Honestly I think Witherspoon makes most of their money on their thriving maintenance arm. They'll come to your house every month and spray/feed/prune for you... so a lot of the roses they sell aren't disease resistant.

Confession time, I did buy one David Austin rose from them this year since I couldn't find it own-root online and it's done fine so far.

@MNDutch RoseGuy Have you received your roses or anyone in the FB group? How are they? I saw those Macy’s roses just yesterday, but was hesitant to buy! If the reviews are good I’ll gladly snatch some up!

@Dillybeansown (6b in the Ozarks) they were ok, they need some TLC, i paid a lot more for a lot less. The canes are thick but the roots are small, theyll make it I'm sure. Two for less than 25, is not a bad price

Ann, I guess that I was lucky with my Hirts order

My first order a few years ago was for Purple Prince and it was the tiniest twig ever but it did really well

The last order was much larger plants and they were $10

No way would I pay more than that

My Rose of Sharon was $10 and way bigger than the one for $30 from whoever I bought the last 2 from

    Like I say, lucky

I received beautiful roses from the Antique Rose Emporium, also one great one from Chamblee's, and very nice bands from Rogue Valley Roses which however were severely nibbled by the ground squirrels. The six roses I ordered from Roses Unlimited will not arrive until April, and that is my one caveat about that company because in my climate zone the winter months would be optimal for planting. By April hot weather could be looming soon.

BenT did you grow English Perfume in Texas? If so, was it a keeper? Beautiful pictures of EP on HMF, fragrance and color are in my wheelhouse. This lease house I am in has a huge lot, but the entire lot is slanted up with many trees. Limited flat areas and limited sun. Each of my selections must be carefully considered.

I grew English Perfume for the first time this year in California. I think it’s an excellent and underplanted variety, able to produce nicely formed, very ruffled full petaled good sized blooms in the heat of summer. It is also extremely long lasting.

@BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14) how did your Patsy Cline do? That's on my want list and it's hard to find it for sale!

Follow up on my little Golden Celebration from Annie's Annuals. The 4" pot start (maybe 7" tall and spindly) sent out three basal canes in six months. The plant was just under 36" tall by the end of season 1. I had to cut it back this spring--but I was pleasantly surprised just how vigorous and healthy it was from such a small start!

  • BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14)

    Robert

Patsy Cline is one of my favorite new roses. The scent is crazy good, a mix of perfume and old rose, super strong and very consistent. One of those few roses that could be grown just for its fragrance. The plant is just what you would expect from a rose bred from Double Delight X Angel Face. It’s not big or strong or fast growing, but still manages to put out a generous amount of bloom.

Here are a couple places to order roses, some I've ordered from or heard of. Be very very careful. There are some 'rose buying' internet sites that are fake. If you find a 'cheap' rose place, even if it says it's for 'charity' - it's likely fake. People are making a lot of money off unsuspecting plant and rose buyers. Do your research and find others mentioning buying from them here on Houzz or other rose forums.

K&M Nursery in MS. Huge place has tons of different roses on own root or Fortuniana. The online list is representative, they have many many more roses. Family style business - send an email with order details (what you want, what root, etc.) and they will CALL you back to order. Can sometimes take a few weeks as they get swamped with orders during the season. Good healthy plants. Had several 6 potted roses shipped by them. All arrived safely.

Angel Gardens in Florida also ships. Pam has OGR mostly and all own roots, no spray. I've been to AG and bought plants from Pam myself. She ships too. https://angelgardens.com/

    Garden Roses LLC

5" quart pots, own root, lots of older David Austin roses

    https://gardenrosesllc.com/

I don't know how good they are, but once I get my order in Spring I will let you know.

A note to add about Breck's and Spring Hill: they stand behind their warranty and don't make you jump through hoops for it, which I very much appreciate. And they both have great sale prices at least a few times every year.

Michigan Bulb, they also stand by their warranty. I haven't ordered from them in a long time, but they are who I ordered my first roses from in 2006. All of them lived and most thrived and I was a complete gardening noob at the time - this was my first plant purchase ever. I bought a few hybrid teas (I didn't even know what that meant back then) and a rose mix which included a green rose and and a red rose (both the red and green were mini's but I didn't even know what that was at the time). The red one is the best groundcover rose I have ever had. Always in bloom, true rich Valentine's Day (the holiday) red, super healthy, and true groundcover that spread low and wide. Now that I know a little about roses I know the hybrid teas were grafted, good size, and healthy and if I had known more about caring and pruning roses back then they probably would have thrived.

@BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14) How is your Buxom Beauty? Is it healthy? Does it bloom well for you? Are the blooms as large as some people say?

The Buxom Beauty I got from RU has been surprisingly vigorous and healthy, and has huge fragrant blooms with good repeat. Very happy with the variety

@BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14) Great information, thank you! Like Aaron, I want to know what you think of Flavorette Honey Apricot rose. Also, please be careful when you plant it. This past year I received plants (not roses) from Proven Winners, ordered directly from the Proven Winners website, that had lots of bugs in the soil. :( I know you wrote this rose is from Garden Crossings, but please check the soil carefully anyway. My Spring order from them was clean with no issues, but my early summer order was really bad: snails, worms, ants, and a spider. I dropped one of the pots when taking it out of the box because all the ants started running out. Last year, I bought a Proven Winners plant at a local nursery and when I planted it noticed it had the invasive earthworm. Since that was from a nursery I can't blame Proven Winners, but just want to ask you to please be careful anyway.

Has anyone ever ordered roses from Fedco? They are better known for their seed, fruit, trees, shrubs and other garden products, some of which I've had reason to buy from them. I've been favorably impressed. Their plants are rudely healthy, strong and sturdy good-sized specimens that thrive as soon as they're planted. My only complaint is that they sell out quickly. They also offer a handful of very interesting cold tolerant roses; antiques, Canadians and seldom available hardy modern roses. I have been tempted to try one or two that are harder to find. Has anyone ordered from them before? What was your experience? I wonder where they are getting their roses, maybe Canada?

  • Patrick-7a-MD

The ANTIQUE ROSE EMPORIUM is my absolute go-to rose vendor because the plants are big and healthy, easy to use website, and the customer service has always been stellar. They also grow varieties that can handle heat, humidity, black spot, and thrive on their own roots. If they don't have what I want then I look to HEIRLOOM ROSES and ROGUE VALLEY ROSES.

I mostly stick to mail order nurseries on the West Coast which carry a lot of actual old roses. Oh, and of course Annie's, which I can drive to in 30 minutes. Rouge Valley Roses, Heirloom, Burlington. If I cannot find what I want I try Angel Gardens, and have had good experiences there. All of these nurseries are in more moderate climates, like mine, so I don't have to worry about whether they can ship or not because of the weather.

Not sure if someone else mentioned this or not - yes, you can buy Heirloom’s roses via Amazon, but the warranty is only 30 days & you can’t build points. I recommend ordering direct for the 1 year warranty & the reward incentive (I think they’re still doing that?).
