What is your favorite Antique Roses for Texas?

Hi All,

I've been growing Antique Roses so far.

My current garden has been destroyed a lot by the pool building and I have now an opportunity to rebuild the garden again.

I would love to hear new ideas and inputs from fellow roses lovers.

Here are my favorites:

Clotilde Soupert
Ducher
Madame Laurette Messimy
Spice
Mary Washington

I have more favorites but I think these have the best form as a landscape rose also.

What are your favorites?

I'm especially looking for small to medium roses.

How about a Tea rose? Mme Lomberd is a favorite, along with Mrs. Dudley Cross, but you can not go wrong with a Tea, or if you want something smaller , maybe Mountain Mignonette? It's a Polyantha, I believe. High country Roses is where I got mine :)

Any Tea Rose's would do great! Just pick a color. You can ask about it here, I think while most are healthy, there are a few to avoid, hope you find what you are looking for!

I love Mrs. Dudley Cross and other teas.

But I haven't tried Mme. Lombard (or failed in the past).

"Mountain Mignonette" sounds great and it's new to me.

I love Polyantha too.

Dr. Grill is my favorite tea. if you are in a desertish area, it’ll bloom all year.

i’d also recommend Marie Van Houte, a white-blush tea. Very fast growing, pink in midsummer.

I’d grow more teas if i had the space.

I used to live in TX and was absolutely in love with Tea roses! Duchesse de Brabant is a moderately sized, classic, silvery pink, easy keeper with a lovely fragrance. (She resides in my PNW garden now.) Teas take a few years to grow into their own, but then….Wow! I also adore Polyantha Marie Pavie. Her sweet fragrance wafts when conditions are right. I think Kim Rupert’s Lauren is well suited to TX. Lovely lavender-mauve! I grow these last two in my current PNW garden as well. I’d also go for the Tea Odee Pink if you have a spot for it. Great fragrance in a pretty, soft pink. Carol

I have several teas in Southern California and the most vigorous and best bloomer by far is Monsieur Tillier. Constantly blooming, just started another flush mid January. The cleanest foliage with zero mildew but we have no black spot so I have no idea about that.

It seems to love my yard with pH7 sandy loam and drip irrigation. That picture was taken early morning on Oct 31st. Then it had another flush beginning of December and it is just budding another flush now. I did give a partial pruning last week even though it’s budding because I have never pruned it and there were so many crossed branches and small branches throughout the center. Rosette Delizy is on the left at a 45 degrees angle into MT due to several wind storms pushing her into him. I pulled her up straight and then saw the mess of crossed and tiny branches in the interior of MT. My plan is to get the structure nice in this 4th year and then he should not need pruning much, if any, after this. I am hoping for 8 feet of height in that spot. MT goes dormant in the heat of the summer and the blooms he does have are only 2 inches instead of 3-3.5 inches.
