How to retrofit a voltage regulator

Hi, I have a Husqvarna YTH 18542 Motor B&S 3 3R777 0005. It apparently has just a diode to regulate voltage. I couldn't locate a new diode where i live, but found one used that hadn't damaged the battery before. However, it too was overcharging at 17 volts, which I surmise was what caused the battery damage. I want to know if someone can tell me how to retrofit a voltage regulator to it.
