Sick cat with eye covered with third eyelid and doctors aren't helping

My cat's eye is covered with a third eyelid. My vet thought it was an ear infection but the pills didn't help. Now they think it might be an ear tumor. They have recommended various specialists in the area, each one has various hoops we have to jump through to get in, which we haven't succeeded at yet, and even then the cat scan would be about 6 weeks away at best. Meanwhile he is not eating well. One cancer vet tried to say (just by discussing on the phone) that it is a dermatology issue and the dermatologist doesn't agree.

So basically nobody really knows what the problem is and nobody wants to take our huge amount of money to help him.

Has anyone had any experience or have any advice on what to do?

I'm sorry no one has responded. I have never heard of this, but maybe disclose where you live so someone might make a recommendation. Where I live (large metro area) there are emergency and referral veterinary specialists. There are at least 2 opthalmology specialists not far from me.

Sometimes they are called veterinary specialty clinics, or similarly named.

Why does your vet think it's a ear infection, if it involves your cat's eye? Did he or she have an explanation where that made sense? Your own vet should be referring you to the next step up the ladder.

If none of this works out for you, I can urge you to contact an opthalmology-vet specialist at a veterinary school. In the past, I contacted an esteemed surgeon (school was a day's drive away) about our dog's brain tumor. This man was so nice he called us from conference in Europe to talk to me about our dog's imaging studies we had sent to the school. A school or veterinarian at a school might have a way to help you, and you can start that with some phone calls. But honestly, what's with your vet that he/she isn't pursuing this avenue?

Thanks Mrs. S. I'm in Metro Detroit. I've tried about 4 places. The vet had a reason for thinking it was an ear infection but I don't remember the name of what she thought the disease was. She gave me the list of other specialists but that's all she has done to follow up. And some of them won't take my kitty unless we can explain the medical problem he has (which we can't because we are not vets). I've also tried the esteemed vet school at MSU and they also had a hoop to jump through that we haven't conquered yet. But maybe I'll see if we can keep working on MSU to find someone to help. Maybe call someone directly there.

Good luck. Please let us know.

I want to add that many "referral veterinarians" won't see a pet on a non-emergency basis unless the pet has been specifically and formally referred by your veterinarian.

I'm sorry about this. I really would like to know how this resolves, and I hope your kitty gets help and relief soon.
