Anyone heard of “New Garden Plants” as a vendor?

They have a couple varieties I would like to order, but I am leery of the very, very low prices. Anyone had experience with them?

Never heard of them but I googled it and found a business address in Hudsonville, Michigan, about 10 miles from me. Could this be the one? Google maps show a residence with greenhouses behind it. Went to their website and not sure if they have what I'd be interested in but if it's the place you refer to, I will try to check them out in the future.

I might add that this area is noted for and has many commercial greenhouse businesses and growers.

I don't know it but it is easy to research. This is an online plant vendor only. Hasn't been around too long and has a very limited presence on Garden Watchdog. Reviews are very mixed, regardless of source - as many negatives as positives. Most have to do with poor customer service if any problems (plant health, mislabeling, substitutions, etc.) arise. One concern was an "F" rating by the Better Business Bureau.

I rarely do any mail order but if I did, this company would not be very high on my list. I'd approach with caution.

ETA: This seems to be a 2 man, mom and pop operation. My assumption is that they are too busy in season to be very responsive to customer issues.

I like to know the size of the pot they are talking about for advertised plants. For annuals I could easily find this but not for perennials. They called it a pint and I cannot gage that anymore. I wish them luck.

I can't seem to post an actual link but I think If you copy and paste this to your browser it will bring you to the one I found. I guess this is a link. :)

" I like to know the size of the pot they are talking about for advertised plants."

Looks like most perennials and vines are sold as quarts or a pot that is approx. 4.5 inches wide and 4-5 inches deep. A pint pot has a 4 inch diameter/width and is slightly less than 4 inches deep.

Old_dirt, thanks for putting the link up. gg, thanks for sharing the reviews you found. Given those reviews especially the one from the BBB, will stay with my other vendors. $10 for a hosta seems too cheap for good plants without being able to see them.

For better or worse, i decided to give them a try. If they have to grow in pots for the first year, so be it. I'll let you know how it goes. Here's what I ordered:

    Echo the Sun

    Hope Springs Eternal

    June Spirit

    Tears in Heaven

    Dark Beauty Toad Lily

    Golden Pineapple Sage

    Handwriting on the Wall Daylily

djacob, Yes I have about 200 hosta's in my yard. along with perennials, shrubs, and annuals.

I've been reading the hosta forum for years and truly enjoy it. I started ordering from New Garden Plants in 2015. My hosta's come from many of the nursery's that have been mentioned on here.

  • last year

Well cheryl10, join us and post your beauties, ask and answer questions and play the ABCs with us next 12/26/24. I know I would love to see more beautiful gardens. I often visit the perennial forum as well in the spring and summer. Hope to see you in both forums.

I just placed a large order from them as well. I should get mine the first week of April. I will let you know how the plants make it all the way to Delaware

  • last year

I've been ordering from them for the last two years. Great selection! I haven't had any issues.

  • last year

I just wanted to give an update. I received my order a few days ago. All the plants were in great condition and much larger than the ones I got from other well known online retailers.

  • last year

Thanks for that update printesa!! My orders won’t arrive for a while yet, but so happy to hear your order was in good condition.

Due to the number of negative reviews I wanted to give an update. I ordered two "Quart" Lenten roses. They arrived in good order, with several sprigs of green leaves and the root bundle moist. I have reordered for several other varieties that are not available in my home nurseries. I was satisfied.

  • last year

Any other updates after you've received the plants?

    I am very tempted.

  • last year

I planted all them and they all caught and look good. I am very pleased with them and I will definitely be ordering from them again

Maybe somesone can help me navigate the website better.

I click an item to read the details' when I'm finished with that I click the back arrow< to return to the catalogue.

It always returns to the 1st listing in the catalogue.

So one is forever scrolling down to pick up where you left off.

Am I missing something? Clearly the website needs technical updating because there are other glitches.

If the plants are good size and quality for the money it may be worth ordering. That's why

I'd love to hear from others who got their recent orders.

    Thanks

Mine was doing that also...but I found out that if I clicked too "hard"... it bypassed going back to the last page, like you said. I noted that a light, quick click on the keypad instead of the mouse took me back properly. (my mouse is horrible, anyway, lol) or you can right click on the BACK arrow, and see the past page that you were on, and click it. Hope it helps.

Well the heuchera and 1 coneflower, Lemon Drop, came today. 1 conflower was sold out so they issued a refund. All the plants look good. The Fire Alarm heuchie is a bit smaller than the Peach Crisp, but will plant up fine. I will shop with them again.

I quit mail ordering plants (with the exception of hosta) because I was getting small twigs, but these look nice size to start out with.

They're the best online plant source I've used in recent years. All my perennials arrived in great shape, were bigger and nicer than the other supposed "high quality" vendors' plants and were well packaged.

  • last year

Steve, how are the new plants doing? Debra, can you post a pic of Fire Alarm, I've been looking for it locally and haven't found it. I wondered just how red it is.

  • last year

It’s still small. I may have it in too much sun…. As you can see, the new leaves look very red, while the others look a bit bleached out. I have had good luck with Heucheras in sun. You can see Heuchera Caramel next to it. They both get sun until about 1:00.

Terrible product. $180+ and little plants, many half dead. :(

The two in the front are terrible, and one behind the front two. But, even the petunias are in rather poor shape, imo. I am disappointed.

I am surprised by that..I ordered again for this Spring and I got everything in great condition.

I would contact them by phone and be willing to email pictures. Delivery trucks can be unreliable sometimes and that in your zone or any zone can be a cause..

I'm awaiting my 4th order from New Garden Plants. They've become my go to for many excellent perennials. Everything I've bought from them has arrived in excellent shape, was nicer than expected, and has thrived in my Pacific N'West garden & the gardens of the designs I've done. HIGHLY recommended.

Debra, my heuchera Caramel is thriving. Any other heuchera or heucharella I've tried (all locally sourced) have either died or are struggling.

My Caramel gets some morning sun. The others are on the west side of our house and get only a bit of afternoon sun.

I had a terrible experience from them you can read it here.

3 plants missing. Two sad looking plants. One dead on arrival and one wrong plant.

Peter lied to me that he would refund me for the four plants now is saying he would only refund me for the three that were missing.

@Ziosocal My experience exactly. I have called a few times, on the weekend and today. No answer. No means to leave a VM.

I filled in their "returns" form, only to get an auto reply that states I need to follow the next steps with no next steps listed.

I also went to their Google Business listing. They have a 3.5 out of 5 from 118 reviews. About 1/3 of the reviews have the same complaints you and I have:

    Terrible dead or near-dead product.

    Can't reach owner.

    Poor customer service.

I appreciate that this is probably a small business and it is very hard to run such a business, but my $186 order is important to me. There is a window at the start of the season to get beds and pots sorted, and even having to wait on a return (which at this moment seems unlikely), it kind of throws everything off. If you do succeed, you are likely another two weeks in, and it's just that much more difficult to get alternate products, or it is even, in my zone, a bit late in getting things in the ground.

    Not a great experience.

Lilimarlene1. I spent $186 too! It's very frustrating and wrong. If he does not contact me back by today I will be calling my credit card. Have you tried talking to yours?

It feels like I'm talking to a bipolar person that keeps telling me something different each time they reply with a "thank you for your business".

Also a really negative experience here. I'll never order from them again.

Nine heucharas arrived with soil bone dry and near death. They were also very leggy when they were alive, so obviously grown too close together. I watered immediately but they remained in poor shape. I emailed Pete and sent pictures and was told they'll bounce back with water and to get them in the ground right away. He does not live up to his promises on his website and I think hopes people will just give up and not pursue it and he can keep their money.
