Kitty, I've found that a lot of red and purple roses darken after cutting, including Ascot, Rouge Royal, and Wild Blue Yonder. It's very noticeable and doesn't have anything to do with lighting. Your Rouge de Parfum and fancy lettuce are beautiful. I'd use the lettuce in a bouquet. Do you plan to eat it?

orange coloring. as temperatures and light are lessoning roses or aging roses turn from red to fushia, wine, and purples bring out blues.

Thank you Sheila. Unfortunately I do have a few clematis that aren't doing too hot, barely holding on in fact, and I'm not sure why. In more positive news, one of the baby bunnies born in the garden this year has taken a liking to me and is getting increasingly comfortable around me. Yesterday I stood about two feet (literally) away from it as I watched it eat my expensive violas lol. It's sooooo cute. I call it Bun Bun 😂

Well, I'm baaaack!!! lol :) :) I'm feeling a LOT better. Not totally better, but almost. I can't tell you all how much I enjoyed reading the comments (thanks for the kind thoughts) :) :) and seeing the DIVINE pictures!!! As some of you know, my roses are not doing well yet, so it's inspirational and calming to see all the glorious roses here!!

The roses went into the backyard today!! YAY!!! FINALLY!!!! I wasn't feeling great, but I was outside and directing Don where to put roses. I did a bit of pruning...more canes that needed to come off. My two best roses are Violet's Pride (lots of leaves and buds) and Perfume Factory...ditto. Most of my roses have very few leaves. And, of course!!! we have water restrictions (cause, why not? lol)...a pipe burst on a nearby street and we won't have water to use for gardening for a few more days). And my roses REALLY need to be watered and fertilized with fish fert. Ugh and lol. Maybe in a few days.

I also got 2 penstemons Coral Baby and Prairie Jewel today...planted those with Don's help and I hope they do well. :) :) Thanks, Diane for the Penstemon Push!!

I've had 2 physio appointments for my vertigo...they've helped...I have an appt on Saturday with a vertigo guy at the physio...he's helped me before. Then, hopefully, I'll be back to normal.

Carol, the old Carol is back! Thanks for the swoon, but no vertigo, please when you swoon. I hope you're feeling well enough to start the summer thread, but no rush. I hope the vertigo guy keeps helping you. I can't wait to see those penstemon which I'm not familiar with. I just got a bunch of Pike's Peak Purple and good old, dependable Red Rocks. My penstemon are starting to bloom, and I've got an eye popping blue one which I can't match with a tag. I am so happy your roses are finally out for good, and may they start flourishing with leaves and buds. My new Angel Face is blooming and growing, but is still in its nursery pot, sort of like Rougie from last year. He's doing well and I still need to take some pics of his new blooms. It had been 80F for a couple wneeks, but for a few days it is dipping down to 61F-73F, cooling…. and raining every couple of days! I planted 6 of my Japanese roses, but kept 8 of the small babies in pots on my porch -to keep partly out if too much rain! I hope to transplant them to bigger pots and plant them in the garden in 1-2 months! Hope! Hope!

Many projects for spring/summer. i am asking my gardener to dig out for me a new circle bed for 9 roses still in pots for Monday. Also, I have soil to dump on my DA bed.

I finished last weekend dumping soil and planting a few Japanese/ Euro roses in their bed.

I am spiffing up 4 oval, circle and triangle beds in my back yard. Takes me awhile to finish each bed. I have about 21 more Japanese/Euro & other roses to plant this summer. They are all in pots for now. I try to plant a few each M/Tues. on my days off.

Also, I went to Lowes and purchased some blooming small dahlias, petunias to put in front porch pots and border front hill beds. My summer flowers! I planted cherry tomatoes and peppers last week end.

Berry, I was thinking about you, and thank you for the nice comment. My allergies are horrible, starting in April and tapering off in late October when sagebrush bursts into yellow from pollen. Right now the messy, hateful male locust trees are dumping pollen by the dumpster over the sidewalks and my roses. it sticks to everything. It's theorized that because landscapers, in their infinite wisdom, thought male trees were less messy they planted them all over the place, and this has worsened US allergy miseries.

Carol, I'm no longer shipping seeds and cuttings to anyone but Berry and to you if I could get plant material across the border. My reasoning is that I live in the country, am pushing 79, and no longer drive. I have to have a granddaughter do my shipping at the post office or UPS drop site. Clare shipped my package to you, Berry, and she was happy to do it. So, I'll give a pass to shipping cuttings to Straw. I'm sorry. Diane

I’m afraid your last pic of Double Easy Orange pushed me over the edge. J&P has the patio tree version of DEO on sale for $35, and I could not resist. I’m pretty good at starting bare roots in the hot summer, but a tree rose will be a new challenge.

Berry, someone on another thread commented on your "two ships that pass in the night", by saying it was from a Barry Manilow song, ferpetesake. It's a famous quote from a Longfellow poem dating to 1874, But you knew that. Next, someone will say it's from an old Elvis song. Those huge honey locust trees in the h#ll strip are horrible. I've spent a fortune over the years having tree people prune, trim, and deal with the monsters, much too large for a skinny bit of grass. They are the trees that have ruined my bed of Evelyn roses, Brother Cad, Royal Bonica, and Jude. It's turned these reliable bloomers into once bloomers because of the shade the overpowering trees produce. We don't own the messy things; the town association does, but we have to take care of them. I need a lumberjack with a big chainsaw. It's ice cream season all year long here. I just got some pistachio. I love that orange cream type which is like a Dreamsicle from my childhood.

Jim, I love your coreopsis and all your well grown other plants. I'd grow more coreopsis, but the quail will only leave Early Sunrise, an oldie, alone. I'm going to check out your link. Jemma's work of art, using empty pepper pot seed cases of purple poppies. That was a tongue twister. She painted each one with acrylics. Every year after I empty them of seed I don't what to do with the things, so I give them to Jemma.

Well I’m gone for a couple of days and it takes me half an hour to catch up! Everyone has beautiful, prolific roses. Diane, yes I’m a farm girl surrounded by pastures. We get lots of bugs. Still wondering if it’s those awful chili thrips and maybe they came on ARE roses? I mean the good news is, they wouldn’t survive our winters. But the bad news is they’re awful right? Every single bloom on Marchesa Boccella had it. And her first thrush. 😭 Also while we were gone it was 96! Ugh!!!! So you all don’t think all I do is complain, every day I’ve had to pinch myself to think bloom season is finally here. I (like all of you) have waited so long.

Since not even one zimmia seed opened I went to the Grange to buy plants forbthe dreaded bavk corner waistland. Nothing does very well bavk there. No sun until 11 and then hot afternoon sun all day. Ladt year I put several bags of soil conditionrr and still lost 2 clematis. This spring I poured bags of compost and replanted 2 new clematis and I mitice that itjing with the new compost is doing well. So when watering I dug and saw that under the top of the soil it is bone dry, no wonder nothing looks healthy. Do you think adding manure would break it up and aerate the soil? I am aftaid that im going to lose that entire bed and my raised bed that I used the same compost on.

Got home, checked the garden. Pulled off a bunch more brown buds. Do you know this insect? Like small June bug. Is this a Japanese beetle? It’s the third I’ve found in the opening bud of Lichfield Angel. And I put down Bioadvanced grub control a month ago.

You’re good! What a blessing to not have to worry about them. Until last year, I didn’t either but I got Aster Yellows so badly last year that now I have to make sure leafhoppers are somehow under control.

I have an almost full bag of Barnyard Blend manure I will try. It is just weird dusty soil that water doesnt permeate. So tomorrow, manure, worm cadhing and bat guano and see if that helps.

Many years ago, I got some compost for free from our city. Nothing would grow through it and water wouldn’t go through it, it would just sit on top. I think it had gotten way too dry before it was mine. Anyway, it eventually got better. I was like you and added good compost. Just so strange. It was like the best weed barrier ever.

Kristine, I was confused like Jim. The water is absorbed nicely by the compost, and drains well to the soil below the compost. This soil is dusty and dry and thin, and doesn't absorb the moisture. Perhaps this soil is not true topsoil, but subsoil that the builders left after they removed the topsoil for other uses. You can add a lot of compost, manure, etc, and also on the very top maybe something I use called Soil Pep. Also really work that compost into the soil beneath it. Have fun. Or make hub have some fun. I'd have a soaker hose run slowly for a long time on top of the compost letting water slowly soak into the layers. Whew.

Melissa, Grub control like bonide granules will get rid of thrips, but I doubt it will kill these beetles. Years ago, I had a plague of black blister beetles--skinnier than your guy and dumb as h@ll, and they liked yellow flowers like calendula, but didn't land on roses much. I put on my gloves of death, and for a good two weeks, every afternoon, I squished and popped those blasted beetles until they were all gone. A few came back the next year, and then no more. That was about 15 years ago. Could you stand to pop your beetles? I enjoyed it. If they're dumb and slow and you plunge your hand straight down onto the beetle as it chows down. It's easy to pop! those beetles. If you flub, they drop to the ground, their chief defense mechanism, I guess.

Oooh, the sun is setting and it's a deep red across the sky. Beautiful. I don't think it made it up quite to 95F today. I cut a huge Sarah Bernhardt plonk. She produces 10 times easily the number of blooms my other peonies do. Diane

Turns out our water restrictions (even within the house) will continue for 5-7 days. Ugh. I might have to sneak out to water my roses in the middle of the night. I wish I had given them a really good soaking before this happened. But who knew? They're talking about us running out of water. So we're not washing dishes, doing laundry, etc.

Kristine - I had the same issue with zinnia seeds last year, so I didn't bother with them this year. Rats about how dry your soil is. Could you aerate it with a pitchfork? Or dig it all up and add compost throughout? I'm not sure how big the area is. Or I could send you some ants since we have so many...they'll tunnel through anything. :)

Grub control granules don’t remove some beetles. You have to spray directly on a beetle or squish it. Usually people pick them off & squish them daily. Sorry, but it is the most common method.

Kristine, My clay soil below all my good soil stays clay. I have worked in manure & rich soils, digging it up & mixing it, which makes the soil good. When I dig garden beds out of the grass, I over turn the grass and the grass mixed in the soil, then I add manure and enriched soil seems to create a lot of good soil to grow in. There are many amendments one can add to improve the soil. I add new amendments every year. I’d water the area to soften the soil then add manure and enriched soil amendments. Mowing the yard and putting the grass clippings in the soil is another good amendment.

My temps in last few days are 68F todat, 60F-67F next 2 days! Little rain today, then no rain for ”4 wonderful day!” It has revisited spting!!!!

Carol, Any fuchsia coming in the mail for you soon? My 2 fuchsias are budding up pink blooms to my surprise! (I list my purple/pink fuchsia which was dying when it was delivered.) These baby pink/white fuchsias are growing quickly. I will get some bigger ceramic pots for them! My cool spring weather lately and growing on kitchen shelted porch “shelf” has really helped them to flourish! I even gave them fish fertilizer. (My new anemone are very green, happily growing on porch in this cool weather-no blooms yet! )

Then in 3 days my temps go to 80-88F SUMMER WEATHER daily!

Kristine, I have realized potting soil/pots seems to grow any seed and I get nothing sometimes if I direct sow. Sooooo….. I have a million pots now! Actually, most of my seedlings are planted now. I only have oansy seedlings left and a ton of rose babies in pots. It is extra work with all these pots, but really gives plants a good start! The shelf on the porch has been great to keep many of the new potted olants while hardening them off.

My zinnias in my beds have holes from rose slugs, after all my work. They are growing vigorously with my rain anyway. My zinnia on porch steps have no bugs-look great! I have some zinnia blooms looking sm red/yellow, too. I am hoping for more interesting zinnia blooms. Hoping my zinnias were worth the work.

Picking up some flowering plants at the Grange sounds like a good idea! I am all for that!

I dropped by Lowes and picked up some small dahlias, petunias, and impatients that I will add to porch steps and front yard beds. The dahlias and other flowers seem to have nicer blooms so far, than my zinnias. (My home grown dahlias are all very tall, growing vigorously and no blooms yet.) It’s blloming time! Best puck up some flowers akready in bloom at the stores!

Kristine, I have not done well with clematis in past , maybe they didn’t like my soil and burned out seasily. This year I have my new clematis in a big pot! ”Pots work!” Try potting your clematis? Perfect potting soil! This new clematis came 3ft tall and she’s in a BIG pot! She seems happy for now! Also, griwing them in oart sgade helps.

Kristine, I’m positive I had hydrophobic compost and I put such a large layer that I had to move it back where I put plants. It took a lot of watering to make it better. Is that what you’re describing or the soil underneath? Ok I’m moving to the new discussion now.

Thank you! You are soooo kind. What do your fuchsias look like, colors? Their names? Are yours babies at first or big plants? What about buying a couple gallons bottled water at stores to water fuchsias and your little seedlings/plants? How are your roses, ok? It’s expensive to fix water pipes and now is it leaking? I spent a thosand on a new pipe. This old house has need if repairs sometimes! Oh, violet blue w/ pink on your fuchsias-how unique! You probably have had a lot of fuchsias and nany varieties? I had maybe a few of the fuchsuas in my life time. It’s nice to have them again. With all my rain, the fuchsuas are reallyvat home-I didn’t know I could do well with them in NY. I’d like to keep them overwinter indoirs. Did you jeep your other fuchsias overwinter?

Kitty - in the post above yours, I have a link to the fuchsia I'm getting (2 of the same plant). My new fuchsias are medium sized. Yes, I did that...I watered my roses with bottled water...about 50L/13 gallons. Wasn't nearly enough, so then I filled the empty bottles with water from the tap and watered some more. My fuchsias overwinter in the garage...so do my passifloras. :) :)

My overwintered fuchsia is pretty small. The year before I had overwintered it in the basement. It did better there. This year I had overwintered in the garage.

Kristine - beautiful BB. I have that rose too. It was new last year and didn't do much. I'm hoping for better this year...but after the water shortage.
