Need advice painting awkward space!

I have a soffit-like space where my hvac system runs through my family room, lowering the 8ft ceiling by about a foot. Currently we have the underside painted the same color as the walls, but we're wondering if it should be painted the same ceiling color. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

Normally I would say keep all vertical surfaces the wall color and horizontal surfaces white or the ceiling color. But I think painting the underside of those the white of your ceiling would just complicate the look. I would make things appear busier than they are. With everything painted the wall color now I feel like it minimizes the how many surfaces you have there. Good luck, other people may differ on their opinions. :)

Painting the soffit the lighter color would make the space feel a little bigger. It's not a huge difference bu it will help......

Leave it the same color which helps it blend in. Painting it white would only draw attention to it.

Leave it the same color as the wall. paint the underside the same color also, even if it is technically "ceiling." You want to effect height - and you do that by not changing the color.

Yes, guerreroca, keep the soffit as it is. It looks nice and blends in almost seamlessly. Painting it white will only visually bring the ceiling down lower. The opposite of what you want.
