We are moving to a 1970s colonial red brick rancher with bright white mortar. We are leaning toward a Timberline slate color roof and dark green shutters and door. Will the bright white mortar clash? The house is in a wooded area.

You could always get a masonry stain and make the mortar not white.

A visual dilemma without visuals is unanswerable. Everybody has a camera phone. Post a gosh darn pic.

Are the windows and gutters staying white? If so, I don't see the white mortar being something to question at all.

Yes they are going to stay white. The house has a lot of windows. Doubles and triples. Thank you so much.

The mortar does not seem to be an issue. The shutters are too small but do highlight the house. If you go with a dark color, you will lose the highlight but in a wooded area, that may be what you want.

Accent the mid century. Green is a good color with red brick. Shutters though? No. The house will look much better without those.

A portico where the front door and patio are with boxed columns. Much beefier shutters, in a cadet blue. Foundation plantings. Very nice house!!! The mortar is fine. A nicely landscaped walkway to the front door.

I think the slate color roof would be a nice choice. I agree with removing the shutters-they don't fit the windows and don't do much for the facade. I would start by painting the downspouts to match the brick so they don't stand out so much. I think a dark blue/green looks pretty with brick. This is BM Oasis Blue. It's very similar to the color I used on my brick cape.

A good power washing of the concrete area will go a long way to make the house look better as would some fresh landscaping. I'm not sure what planting zone you're in but ferns, hosta, and astilbe all do well in shade.
