Breezy, calming living rooms-. One thing we heard designers talking a lot about this year, particularly at Design Chicago, is the need to design around a sense of calm and wellness. We’re seeing that manifest in soothing and relaxed living room designs. Soft colors, casual fabrics, minimal decor and lots of sunshine hit the note just right, as seen in this Santa Monica, California, living room
2020 Classic Blue-Named Color of the Year 2020 in December by the Pantone Color Institute, classic blue was shown combined with many similar colors at this edition of Maison & Objet. It inspires calm, confidence and harmony, mixing easily with this year’s other popular shades, especially burgundy. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the institute, describes it as “a warm presence that evokes the sky at the end of the day, vast and infinite, opening up a world of possibilities.”
2020- Still within the neutral spectrum, other colors like sand, vanilla, straw and at times washed-out, toned-down yellows have become more popular. They add a soft warmth to interiors and, like other neutrals, they’re appreciated for their relaxing and soothing properties, meeting the needs of a busy society in search of nature.
*** Book-matched veneers on plywood: The photo of this blond kitchen shows plywood that has been edge banded so that it appears to be solid wood. The edge of the open louver door is only three-quarters of an inch thick and is edge banded with the same material that is used on the face and back of the door. That way, you don’t see the glued-together plywood layers. Edge banding takes place after the plywood is cut into panels. The cabinet builder attaches wood strips to the edge of the panel, using a matching wood material that virtually disappears. Like solid wood, plywood cabinet panels may be finished with a wood stain, ranging from light to dark, or a clear finish. Pros: Plywood is sustainable, stable and easy to work with, and it can be purchased in sequential sheets for grain matching. Cons: It needs edge banding, the quality is variable and it is not suitable for lacquer finish due to imperfections in the substrate. If the desired look is solid slab, plywood often will not suffice. Care: The finished product requires wiping down quarterly with a damp cloth and annual inspection of edge banding.
Oriental rug. ... you can’t go wrong with one of these, ... I’ve yet to see one fail in a space of any style. Some modern architecture can tend to feel cold and stark without the right furnishings, and I’ve yet to see when an Oriental rug was not the answer. The exotic patterns and rich colors like you see in this Kazak rug add a layer of warmth and ground a room like nothing else.
floor-to-ceiling pleated sheer curtains to help filter light. The new furniture in the living area features midcentury-inspired lines. A side table with a peacock-shaped base is a favorite and adds a whimsical note.
The ocean view is the star in this family vacation house in Stinson Beach, California, and interior designer Lauren Nelson capitalized on that during the renovation. By relocating the fireplace from its original spot along the wall of windows to its current one on the adjacent wall, Nelson opened up the view completely and gave the room a secondary focal point. The designer looked to the home’s surroundings to inspire the room’s finishes, pulling in ocean-colored fabrics and tiles and staining the oak floors to match the color of the sand. Rope art above the fireplace and whitewashed plywood walls reinforce the casual, beachy style.
Streamlined Coastal Shiplap paneling, bleached wood and aquatic-colored textiles contribute to the coastal feel of this living room by Jesse Vickers of JLV Creative in Charleston, South Carolina.
Bold Color Meets Classic Lines- This robin’s egg blue and lime green living room in Palm Beach, Florida, features one of the boldest color combos on this countdown, with walls painted a high-gloss blue, armchairs covered in a marbled-patterned fabric and lime green poufs and pillows. The designers behind the room were disciplined when filling it — even matching the flowers on the clear coffee table to the color scheme — so that the result feels cohesive and classic. Standing Up to High Ceilings- The dimensions of the furnishings, particularly their height, are key in mitigating the room’s large scale. Eg, Kaplan chose the etagere for its height, which makes the oversize arched opening next to it feel smaller. And she mimicked the etagere’s height by hanging the drawing on the other side of the opening at about the same height. She also used chairs with high backs and tall side tables topped with tall table lamps to stand up to the two-story-high ceilings and other extra-tall architectural details. One of the elements that has the biggest effect on the scale of the room is the large, low-hanging chandelier. “The chandelier brings the ceiling down and creates a focal point at a more human height,” Kaplan says.
Room is great example of how to use tips outlined to give a neutral room a wow factor. The owners have used layering, nature, texture, shades of neutrals & something unexpected. This room is also an example of how to use my last tip: Vary your shapes. The round coffee table and side tables contrast perfectly with the rectangular mirror and sofa. Even the pillows are a combination of shapes. Varying the shapes creates interest and is visually pleasing to the eye. - lighting has also been expertly thought out. The generous mirror not only provides an added shape, but also reflects light & space
Ceiling contrast- you can see how the faintly beige wall and bright white ceiling contrast. This makes the wall color stand out more and gives a sense of freshness that works well to bring a contemporary edge to this Craftsman home.
contrasting ceilings with pure white: In spaces with a lot of fresh white in other elements, such as white linens or other accents, a pure white ceiling can be perfect, despite not “matching” the wall tone.

Creating a whole house color palette: As you make your color choices, go with what you love, not just what is trendy. -->suggests picking one neutral and two accent colors to carry throughout every room. In this house beige and dark wood are the constants, and blues and greens provide the accents.

Need to locate the ironing board near a TV. Maybe in Gym
Gym/Yoga studio. With an available bedroom, a quiet dedicated space for yoga or pilates may be an attainable luxury. If your space and budget allow, enhancing a new studio by adding sliding doors out to a private garden is a wonderful way to create a special place with plenty of light and fresh air. A bubbling fountain augments the mood. Painting the walls a cool, calming color such as blue or gray can also boost the tranquility.
Beige or Gray: Select one. Selecting a neutral doesn’t mean we won’t use other colors in the space; it just means the palette will start with an underlying neutral tone. People’s preferences for beige or gray tend to trump trends,
On rare occasions, it’s possible to find grays or beiges that have a blurry line distinguishing the two. That’s when you can mix them. But it’s a challenging endeavor. And what may be even more difficult is finding a person who loves both beige and gray equally
Beige and color can get along too. It’s important that you choose beiges with the same undertone. Softer colors work well with beige. If you introduce dark browns to your palette, it opens up your options for brighter and more vibrant color choices.
Gray is color’s best friend. Grays really help colors pop, especially against a darker gray. The nice thing about having gray as your backdrop color is that it gives you the option of switching out your accent color. It’s very easy to refresh a gray canvas by simply adding or changing colors.
Minimalism Principles: 6. A little accent goes a long way. The fireplace in this room is such a beautiful piece with lovely patina creating subtly shifting tones. I like the small cluster of vases on the mantel. Just enough to give it a little punctuation.
Minimalism Principles: 5. Use restraint in furnishing styles. Okay, so this room does go pretty far into the monastic realm, but by using such restraint in the bedding and side tables, see how amazing the ceiling and windows look!
A wood-and-metal console table sets the industrial tone. Kaplan had her clients’ Asian prints hung above it, then she played off the artwork with the oversize wooden Asian vase. Playing with scale was a motif she carried throughout the home.
