6. Door From Garage to HouseSome builders include this, while many offer it as an upgrade. Access from the garage to the house is a great feature, allowing you to avoid the elements. Because of grading, there are some circumstances where a door to the house from the garage is not possible. Be sure to ask so you aren’t surprised later. Ck out Railing
2. Recessed Lighting While can lights themselves are generally inexpensive to buy at any big-box store, installing them is another matter. Avoid the hassle of an electrician cutting into your brand-new drywall to install the lights and switches. If your builder has an upgrade, just go for it now. Window treatment
Bathrooms, living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms — shiplap looks great anywhere. The key is to be selective and try not to use it everywhere at the same time. In this particular setting, we love the way the window and the shiplap entice you to slow down and appreciate the surroundings. Perhaps the architect drew inspiration from an old church and then brought the exterior to the interior. The Basics1. Shiplap. Shiplap is an architectural staple that was around long before it started filling up your Houzz ideabooks. It blends into almost any aesthetic and can be incorporated into virtually any room in your home. For one of our projects (shown here), our clients wanted to take a more contemporary direction, so we kept the lines of the shiplap sharp and precise. We paired it with more streamlined furnishings as well, including a midcentury modern accent chair and a crisp white sofa.

This view is just to the right of where the last photo was taken. At 25 by 16 feet, the living room is long and graciously proportioned, but when the Lees moved in, this was the only interior entry into the room. They decided to create another entrance, and during demolition, they discovered an original opening right where they wanted to put one. It had been covered up during a previous remodel. The formal living room serves the family as a music and TV room. The piano is a 1917 Steinway. “I gave it to myself for my 40th birthday, as I’d always wanted to learn to play,” Laura says. She loves tickling the original ivory keys, and the piano’s vintage is a good fit for the 1929 home.
Combining native grasses with pebbled rather than paved areas in your front garden allows rainwater to permeate the soil rather than run off. That’s good news for the local environment and eliminates the need for lawn mowing.
