It takes a special design to enjoy an outdoor space in Pittsburgh for all four seasons, and this project nailed it! This covered deck is directly off the kitchen, framing the picturesque rolling hills. This design was fully loaded with built-in heaters, a fireplace, a ceiling fan, a custom built-in grill, and one of a kind live edge cherry drink ledges.

Multi-level outdoor living spaces in Wildwood, MO. Poolside is a patio covered by the deck above and an under deck drainage system. There is a bar with concrete counter and a True refrigerator. The deck above is made of low maintenance Fibron composite decking and extruded aluminum railing. The adjacent outdoor kitchen has a masonry wood burning fireplace, concrete counter tops, built-in grill, True outdoor refrigerator and plenty of storage. The ceiling and trim are stained cedar and has recessed lighting, speakers, and electric heaters. Photo by Gordon Kummer.

Here is a far shot of the beam screens and context photo for them. The various levels are more evident as you walk through the garden and pan through these garden photos. One difficult spot was keeping the back hot tub walls from getting too tall but being able to form a vault for the hot tub beneath the deck. I was excited about my design for the floating steps up from the hot tub, to serve as lounge bench seating with the back of the BBQ plinth acting as privacy as well as the back of the bench and steps. The planters add green and another seating perch and deal with the grading levels I mentioned in other photos.

The new house sits back from the suburban road, a pipe-stem lot hidden in the trees. The owner/building had requested a modern, clean statement of his residence. A single rectangular volume houses the main program: living, dining, kitchen to the north, garage, private bedrooms and baths to the south. Secondary building blocks attached to the west and east faces contain special places: entry, stair, music room and master bath. The modern vocabulary of the house is a careful delineation of the parts - cantilevering roofs lift and extend beyond the planar stucco, siding and glazed wall surfaces. Where the house meets ground, crushed stone along the perimeter base mimics the roof lines above, the sharply defined edges of lawn held away from the foundation. It's the movement through the volumes of space, along surfaces, and out into the landscape, that unifies the house.
