This project was initially a main floor renovation – the kitchen was old and dated and the layout was poor for entertaining.
Sounds simple enough, but it was only achieved by removing a trap door and the original external basement stairs and building a new side entrance to the lower level. From our first meeting I knew that the trap door was going to be the boss of the renovation – sometimes it’s the oddest things in a home that determine the course, size and scope of a project. We increased the size of the main floor by levelling of the back of the house; this increased the foot print in the kitchen and brought in much more natural light. Custom millwork and plaster mouldings were designed and installed in every room. Lighting was updated and new furniture and soft-furnishings were designed and sourced. On the second floor we renovated the master bedroom and the dressing room. In the basement we dug down, greatly improving the head height and formed a cozy media room and a lux laundry and mudroom.

Before we redesigned the basement of this charming but compact 1950's North Vancouver home, this space was an unfinished utility room that housed nothing more than an outdated furnace and hot water tank. Since space was at a premium we recommended replacing the furnace with a high efficiency model and converting the hot water tank to an on-demand system, both of which could be housed in the adjacent crawl space. That left room for a generous laundry room conveniently located at the back entrance of the house where family members returning from a mountain bike ride can undress, drop muddy clothes into the washing machine and proceed to shower in the bathroom just across the hall. The Troppo Sliding Doors live up to their name. As one of the first doors Carl designed. He conceived the idea from combining his cabinet making skills; living in the Tropics and listening to his clients in regard to moldy clothes in the wet season.
He experimented with different types of mesh to see which one would work allowing air transfer into the cupboard as well as being able to powder coat easily and without the tiny holes in the mesh disappearing.
As you can see our clients have loved the idea of being able fully customize the doors from an extensive selection of different panels. Mirror, white or black glass are popular but we have also used marine ply, rice paper, bamboo, gloss laminates….., the list is endless.
The devil is in the detail if you look closer you will see some of the frames and mid rails have been powder coated providing a seamless finish.
Powder coating the mesh to our clients individual color pallets provides the last element that ties the sliding doors to the room’s decor.

Ream Kitchens
After moving into their home three years ago, Mr and Mrs C left their kitchen to last as part of their home renovations. “We knew of Ream from the large showroom on the Gillingham Business Park and we had seen the Vans in our area.” says Mrs C. “We’ve moved twice already and each time our kitchen renovation has been questionable. We hoped we would be third time lucky? This time we opted for the whole kitchen renovation including the kitchen flooring, lighting and installation.”
The Ream showroom in Gillingham is bright and inviting. It is a large space, as it took us over one hour to browse round all the displays. Meeting Lara at the showroom before hand, helped to put our ideas of want we wanted with Lara’s design expertise. From the initial kitchen consultation, Lara then came to measure our existing kitchen. Lara, Ream’s Kitchen Designer, was able to design Mr and Mrs C’s kitchen which came to life on the 3D software Ream uses for kitchen design.
When it came to selecting the kitchen, Lara is an expert, she was thorough and an incredibly knowledgeable kitchen designer. We were never rushed in our decision; she listened to what we wanted. It was refreshing as our experience of other companies was not so pleasant. Ream has a very good range to choose from which brought our kitchen to life. The kitchen design had ingenious with clever storage ideas which ensured our kitchen was better organised. We were surprised with how much storage was possible especially as before I had only one drawer and a huge fridge freezer which reduced our worktop space.
The installation was quick too. The team were considerate of our needs and asked if they had permission to park on our driveway. There was no dust or mess to come back to each evening and the rubbish was all collected too. Within two weeks the kitchen was complete. Reams customer service was prompt and outstanding. When things did go wrong, Ream was quick to rectify and communicate with us what was going on. One was the delivery of three doors which were drilled wrong and the other was the extractor. Emma, Ream’s Project Coordinator apologised and updated us on what was happening through calls and emails.
“It’s the best kitchen we have ever had!” Mr & Mrs C say, we are so happy with it.

Located in the one of the most sought after streets in Gold Coast this holiday home conveys a nautical feel and boasts spectacular views of the Gold Coast hinterland. The clients have always had a strong desire to create a holiday home that encouraged a sense of relaxed living where by the days would be gentle and slow.
After residing in the US for several years the clients became admirers of homes in the New England region and in particular the Hamptons. They loved the American take on modern English country, and of equal appeal was the classic Hampton beach lifestyle of carefree summers spent sailing, swimming, boating and fishing.
When deciding to renovate their family beach house on the gold coast they knew they wanted to recreate that same effortless elegance and style they were drawn to in the Hamptons and combine it with the relaxed familiarity of Australian living. In their words they wanted to create a home that was “luxurious but never too perfect”.
Central to the brief was also the need to satisfy their enthusiastic and demanding gourmands. Not only do they enjoy everything about cooking but also love entertaining
especially during the holiday seasons with Christmas and Thanksgiving (an American tradition they quickly became accustomed to) being their favourite times to celebrate.
Whether it’s a casual meal with family and friends or a more formal gathering, the kitchen had to function and withstand a great deal of activity.
Our challenge was to bring to fruition the clients very definite vision for their home and this thereby presenting us with an ambitious design and renovation project encompassing a large portion of the home. With the kitchen such being such a focal point in the house our
task was to orchestrate a space that would be elegant yet comfortable and that required the successful marriage of the design elements for their desired style of interior.
Transforming the space. Small, cramped and unbalanced the original kitchen was positioned on a platform - along
with the dinning and master bedroom. The original galley kitchen consisted of a full wall of tall cabinetry which boxed in what was already a narrow kitchen.
To pave the way for a larger and more spacious design sought after by the clients the southern end of the existing platform was extended in length, walls adjoining the hallway
were modified and the opening in the opposing wall closed off. The original laundry on the lower platform which backed onto the kitchen via a hallway was completely redesigned to make way for a new butlers pantry and as requested by the client to house the large Eline
Electrolux fridges (required for entertaining). On the lower platform the original opening to the old laundry (no longer required) was also closed off and a new cavity slider entry was cut into the pantry from the kitchen to provide easy and functional access. A new landing was built to bring the storage area of the pantry up to the same level as the kitchen. A “pass through” was created to connect the pantry to the kitchen and dining room, providing easy
and functional access to the utility room. The exposed rafters and existing ceiling in both the new kitchen and pantry areas were sheeted in to allow for a new and more effective and functional lighting layout.
The conversion of the laundry to allow for a separate pantry and to house the new large fridges (a specific request from the client) was a key aspect to the design as this allowed us to maximise the feeling of space and include large open bench space either side of what
was already a narrow galley kitchen. Here the Calacutta marble benchtops selected for their character look lavish and add clean lines to the design. In keeping with the desire to create a sense of calm, elements of balance and symmetry were incorporated into the design and on
the cooking (western) wall a large induction cooktop and custom made rangehood cladded in Queensland Cedar veneer was centred and is a key architectural element.
The protruded moulding ‘shaker door’ cabinetry further enhance the rooms character and glass front overhead cabinets amplify light and bring the coastal aesthetics into play. All overhead doors are fitted with Blum HF Aventos Servo Drive to ensure functional and ergonomic use in this narrow space.
To store the households extensive collection of kitchen utensils, large platters and crockery, generous storage by way of drawers was incorporated in to the kitchen. With the large fridges placed in the pantry as per the clients request, an under bench integrated fridge was positioned in the main kitchen to allow for the storage of everyday
necessities.
On the opposing (eastern) wall the white ceramic butlers sink is another focal point for the Hampton style kitchen and the ‘Provence’ tap balances with the scale of the kitchen and complements the overall design. A convenient custom made ‘built in’ butchers block was a must have for the client and provides the ideal prep area. The mixed Australian hardwood complements the other natural timber elements including the new Tasmanian oak solid timber flooring and provides textural balance in this timeless interior.
Below the butchers block, two Queensland Cedar solid timber trays boast the family emblem and Initials to mark the kitchens exclusivity and further personalises the kitchen.
Interest and texture.
The earth and sea colour scheme is in keeping with the neutral pallet and softness in the rest of the home and mimic the hues from both the seaside and the views beyond. Careful attention was given to the layering of these earthy shades, tones and textures to ensure the
space had unity and depth – a necessary consideration for such a neutral pallet. An example of this is the marbled tiled splashback. Two variations of the tiles (honed and antique brushed) were sourced and cut to size and randomly placed in a brickwork pattern to create
visual interest and be less predictable at eye level.
The end result.
The resulting kitchen is certainly one of the most show stopping features of the home with its bespoke fit out entirely geared to delivering a functional workspace dedicated to the sheer enjoyment of entertaining and cooking. The effortlessly stylish design and timeless finish
transcends to fit this Australian home and the relaxed vibe this family was so eager to create for their holiday beach house.

This lovely Malvern home saw a total transformation of all wet areas, including the main bathroom, ensuite, kitchen, and laundry.
A professional couple with two young children, our clients tasked us with turning their newly bought Malvern property into their dream home. The property was in great condition, but the interiors were outdated and lacked the functionality to support a young family’s busy lifestyle.
Because this was their forever home, we designed the spaces collaboratively with our clients focusing on nailing their aesthetic brief while providing them with a high level of functionality to suit their present and future needs.
Our brief:
The design needed to be child-friendly but with a sophisticated aesthetic
All materials needed to be durable and have longevity
A fresh, modern look with textures was a must
The clients love cooking, so a kitchen that was functional as well as beautiful was paramount.
The kitchen really is the central hub of this busy home, so we wanted to create a modern, bright, and welcoming space where all the family could gather and share quality time.
The first thing to go was the outdated, curved floor-to-ceiling window, which didn’t align with our client’s vision for their dream home. We replaced it with large modern bi-fold stacking doors that let natural light seep in.
We also removed an impractical external double door and replaced it with a tightly waterproofed servery bi-fold window, which our clients loved.
The existing U-shaped kitchen was impractical with only one access, which created accessibility issues. Our solution was to completely redesign the kitchen to create an L-shaped layout with a large central island and two accesses for even flow.
The table-like island was a priority in our client’s wish list because they wanted a spot where they could sit together and share meals and where the children could do homework after school. They loved the idea of sitting facing each other instead of in a line like you do in standard islands. That’s why we installed a custom-made powder-coated steel leg on the island, which looks beautiful and allows the family to sit on either side of it.
To update the room’s aesthetics, we selected high-quality and durable materials for a fresh and modern look. The sleek white cabinetry features a super matt melamine finish with anti-fingerprint technology, which is low-maintenance, easy to clean and great for when there are kids in the house.
To maximise every inch for functionality, we included smart storage solutions throughout the cabinetry, as well as a spacious pantry that can be tucked away when not in use.
To create visual intrigue and add a textured layer to the space, we juxtaposed the smooth surfaces of the cabinetry and porcelain benchtop with a textured, hand-made look tiled splashback. The splashback is easy to maintain thanks to its epoxy grout, which is waterproof and repels dirt and grime. We also included lovely natural timber handles to add an organic touch to the design.
We wanted the room to feel bright and happy, so LED downlights were evenly distributed throughout, complete with dimmers for when mood lighting was needed. We also used LED strip lighting under all overhead cabinetry and an automatic light in the pantry.
The finishing touch was the lovely hub pendant above the island, which certainly takes the room’s aesthetics to the next level.
To continue with the same modern tactile look in the laundry, we used a handmade square tile paired with led lighting to showcase the texture in the tile.
Because the space also needed to be easy to maintain (and child friendly), we used super matt melamine with anti-fingerprint technology for the cabinetry with porcelain benchtops for ultimate durability. We used large-format tiles, which are easy to maintain and create the illusion of space, perfect for this small room.
Lack of storage was solved with large floor to ceiling cupboards, which allowed us to use every inch of the room. To add a warm touch to this bright and airy space, we used circular timber handles.
For the family bathroom and the ensuite, we continued the child-friendly theme by utilising large-format tiles pair with anti-fingerprint finishes for the cabinetry.
In line with the modern aesthetic of the kitchen and laundry, we wanted to create a sophisticated space that felt unique to the home. Because we also wanted the bathrooms to feel calm and serene, we introduced curves in the design for a softer look and feel.
The circular shape theme proposed by the custom mirrors continues in the basin, large free-standing bath and natural timber handles.
The client loved the idea of using gunmetal finishes instead of the traditional chrome finish, so we selected gunmetal tapware which looks amazing paired with the custom arch mirrors.
The led lighting around the mirrors provides function and form, being a decorative feature that creates mood lighting and additional task lighting. LED downlights were also evenly distributed throughout the spaces- all with dimmers for versatility.
Drawers were the preferred method of storage, and they include concealed power points for practicality which was a critical point of our brief.
Rochelle Lynne Design
Karen was an existing client of ours who was tired of the crowded and cluttered laundry/mudroom that did not work well for her young family. The washer and dryer were right in the line of traffic when you stepped in her back entry from the garage and there was a lack of a bench for changing shoes/boots.
Planning began… then along came a twist! A new puppy that will grow to become a fair sized dog would become part of the family. Could the design accommodate dog grooming and a daytime “kennel” for when the family is away?
Having two young boys, Karen wanted to have custom features that would make housekeeping easier so custom drawer drying racks and ironing board were included in the design. All slab-style cabinet and drawer fronts are sturdy and easy to clean and the family’s coats and necessities are hidden from view while close at hand.
The selected quartz countertops, slate flooring and honed marble wall tiles will provide a long life for this hard working space. The enameled cast iron sink which fits puppy to full-sized dog (given a boost) was outfitted with a faucet conducive to dog washing, as well as, general clean up. And the piece de resistance is the glass, Dutch pocket door which makes the family dog feel safe yet secure with a view into the rest of the house. Karen and her family enjoy the organized, tidy space and how it works for them.
