Billabong Men's Suite 206
Casa Surf Project - Casa de la Camino Hotel, Laguna Beach, CA
Bathroom
10 Surf Companies were paired with 10 designers to create Casa Surf. The historic boutique hotel in the heart of Laguna has become part of the Riviera Magazine Design series to create the Casa Surf Project. One truly unique project. Visit the Casa Surf website for views of these 10 incredibly rich and exciting rooms. www.casasurfproject.com.
Interior Art was assigned 6 rooms, six different designers, 6 surf companies to help create ambience through the backdrop details for each space in this historical property in Laguna Beach.
In Billabong Men's Suite, we designed, developed and performed a hybrid mix of Venetian Plasters in the bathroom & on the headboard wall in the bedroom to create this finish we call "Concrete Plaster" as an organic, contemporary wall treatment strong enough in look & feel to hold up to the look and feel of the esteemed brand of Billabong Men's coupled with Grace Blu Design's ecclectic mix of organic, contemporary, retro feel to the design of this room. The lead designer of Billabong International walked through, approached our walls and declared, "That's the coolest wall finish I've seen". This was a very cool project! We loved being a part of Casa Surf!
Please visit our project files for more views of the multitudes of award-winning specialty venetian plasters, faux finishes and custom art we have performed over the years.

Don't be fooled by this wood paneled champagne bubble bathtub or it's close proximity to the shower visible through the peekaboo windows, It's really a walk-in wardrobe room /bathroom combination. Through the elongated windows you can catch a view of laser etched limestone embedded in the shower walls, with built in bench seat, product niches and elegant Rohl fixtures, every attention to detail was paid to meet this clients needs.
To the left a separate and private toilet room with bidet takes care of business. This room is also a part of the closet, so although you don't see it here, just to the left and behind the camera, is a wrap around full height his and hers closet fit for a fashion queen. The limestone floors have radiant heat and the vessel sinks on either side of the island vanity are hand made and signed by the artist. Above the closet, behind the brown velvet drapes is a whole extra room accessible by the pull out rolling ladder. This room houses the clients extensive seasonal wardrobe.
Behind the armoire doors lie amenities such as drop down ironing board, pull out sewing machine, convenient laundry hamper storage and specialized closet space designed for our clients 160 pair shoe collection and handbag storage. There's even a pull out cart for easy access to carry on luggage. The hardware on the drawers and doors is sheer artistry by designer Edgar Berebi. Last but not least, the walls have a hand applied Venetian plaster.. a 6 day application process. For more on this project watch

Full Potential
Once ridiculed as “antipasto on the Potomac,” the Watergate complex designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti has become one of Washington’s most respectable addresses. But its curvaceous 1960s architecture still poses design challenges for residents seeking to transform their outdated apartments for contemporary living.
Inside, the living area now extends from the terrace door to the kitchen and an adjoining nook for watching TV. The rear wall of the kitchen isn’t tiled or painted, but covered in boards made of recycled wood fiber, fly ash and cement. A row of fir cabinets stands out against the gray panels and white-lacquered drawers under the Corian countertops add more contrast. “I now enjoy cooking so much more,” says the homeowner. “The previous kitchen had very little counter space and storage, and very little connection to the rest of the apartment.”
“A neutral color scheme allows sculptural objects, in this case iconic furniture, and artwork to stand out,” says Santalla. “An element of contrast, such as a tone or a texture, adds richness to the palette.”
In the master bedroom, Santalla designed the bed frame with attached nightstands and upholstered the adjacent wall to create an oversized headboard. He created a television stand on the adjacent wall that allows the screen to swivel so it can be viewed from the bed or terrace.
Of all the renovation challenges facing the couple, one of the most problematic was deciding what to do with the original parquet floors in the living space. Santalla came up with the idea of staining the existing wood and extending the same dark tone to the terrace floor.
“Now the indoor and outdoor parts of the apartment are integrated to create an almost seamless space,” says the homeowner. “The design succeeds in realizing the promise of what the Watergate can be.”

2014 ASID Design Awards - Winner Silver Residential, Small Firm - Singular Space
Renovation of the husbands study. The client asked for a clam color and look that would make her husband feel good when spending time in his study/ home office. Starting with the main focal point wall, the Hunt Solcum art piece was to remain. The space plan options showed the clients that the way the room had been laid out was not the best use of the space and the old furnishings were large in scale, but outdated in look. For a calm look we went from a red interior to a gray, from plaid silk draperies to custom fabric. Each piece in the room was made to fit the scale f the room and the client, who is 6'4".

iLA designs - The Fine Art of Classic Fresco
A Malibu beach-front retreat built by art collector, designer and antiques dealer Richard Shapiro has “the look, age and aura of a very old, windswept structure from the Mediterranean or the Aegean.” All walls in the house are sheathed in frescoed plaster and partially covered by the Renaissance-style frescoes created by fresco artist iLia Anossov. Photo by Miguel Flores-Vianna.
True (buon) fresco—the oldest and most celebrated painting technique—is painting with natural pigments on wet plaster. Paints are prepared from minerals and various clays. Plaster is made of slaked lime (calcium hydrate) and sand. As wet plaster cures a natural reaction occurs permanently embedding pigments into the cured plaster. This artwork is created using true centuries-old fresco techniques and materials.
Unlike faux finishes and fresco imitations, true (buon) frescoes create a unique feeling of authenticity, depth and richness of the artwork. The frescoes can be applied in traditional or contemporary settings: from genuine buon fresco fragments that are aged and worn to match period and style of selected era, to full-sized wall or ceiling frescos whether aged and stylized or fresh and new.
