Simply Baths & Kitchens
This long narrow kitchen needed sleek new style to better compliment its young new homeowners. However, each spouse came to the design process with very different opinions of what to do with the space. He wanted warm cherry cabinetry with rich gold granite and traditional detailing while she wanted calmer, cooler tones with modern edges and accents. Meeting somewhere in the middle, the new kitchen boasts the cherry cabinetry he loves with a cool toned ivory backsplash for her. The surprising element of this room is how husband and wife came together to select Volga Blue countertops: a striking dark granite with blue iridescent flecks. The stone is enough of a statement piece for him while still being modern and edgy for her. The final product of this beautiful collaboration is a beautiful, transitional kitchen they'll both love for many years to come.

Winter is about the end, and you what that means? It’s time for the heat to roll right back and melt the snow away. Spring is fast approaching, and people, mostly in the northern states, are happy about the fact that at least everything’s going to thaw.
We can’t see the same enthusiasm in people living in the south, where temperatures remain quite humid all throughout the year. As temperatures continue to rise in the coming months, Florida and Texas homes will have to be prepped up for the heat.
If you happen to live in these areas where temperatures are sweltering, try these tips to keep your houses nice and cool.
Change your sheets
The air will still be humid when night time arrives. And that makes for an uncomfortable struggle to keep cool and fall asleep in the process. Who would want to doze off sweating all around? With that said, you should be able to adapt to the heat by buying more comfortable and thinner sheets. In particular, you can change your flannel pillowcases and blankets for those made from cotton.
Change your lights
Incandescent lights are aesthetically pleasing. They give off that old-timey vibe that reminds you of a simpler time when everything is illuminated in bright yellow. You might as well imagine the heat being generated from these bulbs, which are far less efficient compared to fluorescent lighting. If anything, fluorescent bulbs and lamps consumer less energy and, hence, produce less heat. With that said, it would be high time for you to switch (no pun intended) to white lights.
Block out the sun
Sunlight can seep inside your living room and bedroom through the curtains. This is the reason why certain parts of the house remain humid even if it’s night time. The main culprit are thin curtains that are not exactly effective in keeping the heat of the sun outside. It is better, in this case, to purchase black drapes that will effectively reflect sunlight and keep your rooms cool like a trip to Norway.
Capture the cold
Let your rooms cool down during the night by keeping the doors shut. Colder air will remain, so that when morning comes, you will wake up feeling fresh and without that sticky feeling of sweat dripping from your pores overnight.
Cook outdoors
Summer and spring are often the best seasons when you can bring out the grill and cook up some burgers and hotdogs. Besides, cooking inside the home will only let the exhaust heat roam around the house. As much as possible, do your cooking outside. Invite some friends over and have an outdoor party with cold beers and coleslaw.
Change your AC filters
When you have an air conditioning system, you might as well put the dial to the max. Then again, it consumes too much power and, therefore, hikes up your power consumption. But of course, you need to survive the sweltering ordeal, so you just have to pay a little extra to keep from panting yourself dry. For maximum coolness, clean out your AC filters and make sure to do away with blockages that keep your unit from pulling the temperature down.

Clifton Leung Design Workshop - CLDW.com.hk
Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the south side of Hong Kong, this state of the art apartment has been completely rebuilt and redesigned wall to wall to suit the owner’s lifestyle.
Interior designer, Clifton Leung basically gutted the apartment and helped to create a reincarnation of the old flat. A major reconfiguration of the conventional three-bedroom layout has produced an extra bathroom, huge walk-in closets and a multipurpose room. The new design is accentuated by a series of flowing spaces featuring architectural curves and ample smart hidden storage.
With no specific designs in mind, the owner’s design brief was short – simply something different. Clifton offered a perfect solution through clever use of feature walls, interesting fittings and materials etc.. The design incorporated something punchy, something people don’t see everyday.
Clifton did his best to comply with the brief. Instead of rectangular air vents, the built-in conditioning and air-purifying systems work through a line of stylish, small round vents. Rather than the usual white window frames, they are slate-grey and irregularly spaced to add more character to the design.
An unusual feature in the master bedroom is a Japanese-style sit-down tub, off the shower area. A compact space which offers the luxury of a spa bath. Irregularly faced mosaic tiles were chosen for the bath. The natural and almost rustic look offers a relaxing and therapeutic ambience.
A state of the art kitchen with fully integrated kitchen appliances is complemented by brushed metal-finish kitchen cabinets in dulled copper and nickel tones, creating an interesting plays of light. A long counter made in the same finish provides a convenient space for breakfast and snacks.
Making the most of the sweeping views of Repulse Bay, the huge balcony is a simple glass divider topped by a steel tube rail. Cool stone floor tiles complete the sharply defined space.
The new design features different kinds of wall – feature walls, textured walls, colored walls, curved walls, clear walls, white walls – and all these blend seamlessly with the surrounding art pieces, painting, designer lights and furniture.
Apart from the aesthetic modern design, the space is also technologically advanced and features a digital entrance system, remote lighting, electric blinds and an integrated AV system.

In this serene family home we worked in a palette of soft gray/blues and warm walnut wood tones that complimented the clients' collection of original South African artwork. It is a contemporary ‘farm style compound’ with the main house accommodated in a ‘barn’ structure, the garages & workshops (steel- & woodworking workshops for the tinkering owner) in adjoining ‘sheds’ and the entrance & staircase housed in a semi-klinker ‘silo’ structure. A lap pool to the North of the barn act as a passive cooling device in summer, by cooling the warm summer winds from the North-East down through the evaporation of the pool water, and drawing the hot air from the ‘barn’ through large apertures facing the pool to the North & the pasture to the South. Triangular windows in the gables can be opened to draw out further hot air rising to the ceiling level inside the house. Proper insulation materials & methods for the roof, walls & floors, together with double glazing results in a cosy & warm interior. The lap pool is also an analogy of a drinking trough for the cows which used to roam the land and found on the farm before it was developed, hankering to its past, but off course also is just a swimming pool, in which the kids can play or train in for swimming galas.
This house is designed to self-sufficient and ‘off-the-grid’ in the end, through the incorporation of many ideas & systems. Sustainable elements include items like a rain water harvesting system with galvanized tanks on the outside in feeling with the farm style vernacular, grey water recycling for garden irrigation, solar water heating- & photo voltaic (electricity generation) on the roof, the use of recycled materials obtained from demolished buildings & bridges at the time, and low-water-low maintenance gardens, indigenous to the area.
