This is our fourth project for this client who purchased a four-bedroom unit in this grand old turn of the century Landmark that had been neglected through the years. Our goal was to restore its former grandeur while providing for our client’s lifestyle. Designed in the classic Victorian style, we removed layers of paint uncovering mahogany doors, oak wainscoting and tile fireplaces. We restored and created new profiles to bring back the richness of detail and bathed the rooms in golden tones to balance the cool north exposure. The panelization is finished with wallpaper to add scale, including a French woodblock wallpaper in the Dining Room to quiet down the rich oak trim. The outcome is airy, elegant and functional.

This 4,000 square foot vacation house in northwest Connecticut sits on a small promontory with views across a lake to hills beyond. While the site was extraordinary, the owner’s existing house had no redeeming value. It was demolished, and its foundations provided the base for this house.
The new house rises from a stone base set into the hillside. A guest bedroom, recreation room and wine cellar are located in this half cellar with views toward the lake. Above the house steps back creating a terrace across the entire length of the house with a covered dining porch at one end and steps down to the lawn at the other end.
This main portion of the house is sided with wood clapboard and detailed simply to recall the 19th century farmhouses in the area. Large windows and ‘french’ doors open the living room and family room to the terrace and view. A large kitchen is open to the family room and also serves a formal dining room on the entrance side of the house. On the second floor a there is a spacious master suite and three additional bedrooms. A new ‘carriage house’ garage thirty feet from the main house was built and the driveway and topography altered to create a new sense of approach and entry.

Nestled into sloping topography, the design of this home allows privacy from the street while providing unique vistas throughout the house and to the surrounding hill country and downtown skyline. Layering rooms with each other as well as circulation galleries, insures seclusion while allowing stunning downtown views. The owners' goals of creating a home with a contemporary flow and finish while providing a warm setting for daily life was accomplished through mixing warm natural finishes such as stained wood with gray tones in concrete and local limestone. The home's program also hinged around using both passive and active green features. Sustainable elements include geothermal heating/cooling, rainwater harvesting, spray foam insulation, high efficiency glazing, recessing lower spaces into the hillside on the west side, and roof/overhang design to provide passive solar coverage of walls and windows. The resulting design is a sustainably balanced, visually pleasing home which reflects the lifestyle and needs of the clients.

With a palette of warm browns and soft raspberries this room, designed for a teenage girl, is sleek and sophisticated. The modular headboard, fabricated from individually upholstered sections of chocolate chenille, serves as a backdrop for the colorful palette of fabrics used for the bed linens and pillows. Any teenage girl would love to sink into her cool, comfy chair when she needs some down time and pull up an ottoman from the foot of her bed. Or, she can lounge on her bed and admire the clever, interlocking art display on the opposite wall. This transitional room will grow with any girl from her early teens through her college years.

Both of these houses were on the Cool House Tour of 2008. They were newly constructed homes, designed to fit into their spot in the neighborhood and to optimize energy efficiency. They have a bit of a contemporary edge to them while maintaining a certain warmth and "homey-ness".

This design of the Fox Hollow Residence breaks down the scale and the conventional notion of an upscale home by separating the primary functions of the house into a series of linked pods that dance playfully along the sloped terrain. This simple gesture gives a distinct character and function to each of the three zones (utility, living, and bedroom), and the resulting smaller-scale structures reduce the environmental impact of the home on the site.
Simple shed roof forms open to the south, providing both a breathtaking view of the Willamette Valley and the optimal solar orientation for passive heating. The home is also passively cooled through use of ceiling fans, operable windows, and vents that draw cool air from the earth-bermed basement below.
The Fox Hollow Residence demonstrates that architecture can be both environmentally friendly and beautiful. The craftsmanship and richness of materials draws from a Pacific Northwest vernacular through use of natural cedar shingles, custom ironwork, and exposed salvaged timber beams. Every detail has been thoughtfully executed, from the modern steel connections to the traditional Amish wood joinery. By thinking outside of the typical residential box, this home has become a showcase of local craft, sustainability and efficient living.
This project was awarded second place in the 2007 People’s Choice Award for Residential Architecture by the A.I.A. Southwest Oregon Chapter. It was also featured in the Winter 2008-2009 issue of “Eugene Magazine”, Lane County’s Lifestyle Quarterly.
