A Whole House Transformation – conceived as a remodel and addition, the final design iteration for this home is uniquely multifaceted. There were structural considerations and the overall floor plan design centered on maximizing the views. Additions to this home totaled over 1,200 square feet. What was once the master suite, on the second floor, is now a teenagers bedroom. The master suite was relocated to the first floor and is now overlooking the pool, pool house and patio with panoramic views of the backyard. The front entrance closet became the new entrance for the master suite, which includes a sprawling bathroom and boutique closet. Underneath this area is the new theater and billiard room located in the lower level. A new front entrance and roof gables were added for a seamless new exterior look on the right side of the house. The new functional home office, gourmet kitchen, wainscot dining room, and laundry on the main level were taken down to the studs. A new traditional style for the home was created with new cabinetry, trim and millwork, space planning and detail. The lower level was gutted and turned into an award winning showpiece with gym, full wet bar and kitchen, wine nook, family room and game room marrying the new addition with theater and billiard area. The entire exterior stucco was taken off the home and pool house replacing it with stone, stone pillars, shakes and board and batten. The small screen deck was torn off making for expansive 3 season living with a new covered stone grill area. The patio was expanded with a stone fireplace overlooking the entire backyard and pool area. Adding to the new design were landscape features with a new concrete driveway, stone address pier light, stamped concrete walkway to the newly created front covered porch and bead board ceiling, creating an amazing first impression.

This Palo Alto home’s traditional Spanish styling incorporates multi-level roofing, with red terra cotta tiles and signature design elements, including a dramatic arched entryway and decorative grille work. Finely crafted materials take center stage in the two-story entrance salon, which features a cascading staircase rising over glowing hardwood flooring. The home’s period-appropriate architecture is punctuated by loft ceilings, plaster walls, and an open, flowing floor plan. The spacious basement recreation room is the ideal gathering spot, with a snack bar, billiards, and foosball tables. A customized home theater completes the picture, with plush recliners, ambient lighting, and a professional-quality digital movie projector.

Design concept, trompe l'oeil mural, and faux finishes for movie artifact collection in foyer, entrance hall and home movie theater.
Inspired by 1930′s movie palaces and art deco icons like the Chrysler building, McKeithan created this home theater featuring faux inlaid black and gold marble, sienna marble, and antique bronze architectural elements. Deco frames accentuate the client’s collection of autographed movie posters, photographs, and props. The walls are fauxed in a rich antique gold and red leather finish. The first photo in this series shows before and after shots of the doorway from the hall to the theater. This hallway adjoins the trompe l’oeil mural foyer.
This mural features trompe l’oeil elements painted to appear 3-D like the faux finished architecture of the adjoining hallway and theater. Everything pictured in the mural is actually painted on flat walls but made to appear to recede in space; columns, curtains, reflective marble tile floor, carpeting, doors, framed posters, doors to outside, and a life-sized Oscar statue all are trompe l'oeil.

Downstairs, the gym and private screening room give mom and dad a place to unwind. Big fans of sci-fi & comic book movies, the theater’s entrance is decked out with classic Star Wars posters. Inside, the 5 seat theater features a Sony 4k Projector, 7.2 surround sound (with Episode speakers hidden behind panels on the walls) and a 200 inch screen from Screen Innovations. All the necessary hardware from Integra is stored in an equipment closet, freeing the theater of unsightly clutter. As an added wow-factor we installed a starry night ceiling display, giving them a total cinema experience in the comfort of their own home.
